Westminster College Equestrian Team

Any full-time Westminster College student in good academic standing is welcome to join the team. The team is comprised of a variety of horse experience. In fact, many team members do not have prior riding experience at all. Our members come from a variety of unique and diverse backgrounds, and have in common simply a love of horses and riding.

An annual membership fee is required, which covers some of the cost of lessons. The Student Government Association plays an integral part in providing funding for the equestrian team's lessons and program fee.

For a much reduced cost, the team also offers a non-riding membership. Designed for new members but open to any type of member, this allows members to take part in all activities but the riding lessons and hacks. This allows those new to riding to "get their feet wet" in this wonderful sport.

Membership opportunities include:

  • 15 riding lessons, plus 5 additional hack rides per semester, which ensures that each team member rides twice a week
  • Biweekly meetings
  • Workshops and activities to expose members to all types of riding
  • Horse care and management lessons and clinics
  • Charity events
  • Fundraisers
  • Demonstrations
  • IHSA Showing (if chosen)
  • Team dinners

Joining the Equestrian Team gives members the opportunity to show with the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). This is not a requirement, however, it is simply a way for riders to experience another aspect of the horse world. In a normal year, about three-quarters of the members of the team choose to show as well.

The Team competes on the flat and over fences through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). These shows are unique because all of the riders "catch ride" on horses provided for the event. Catch riding puts all riders on unknown (but experienced!) horses and levels the field of competition for everyone. Riders earn points that accumulate toward advancing to the next division. At the conclusion of the show season, riders may find they have qualified for Regional, Zone, or even National level competition.

Westminster competes in Zone 6 Region 1 of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Shows are often hosted by Findlay University and Lake Erie College. Showing is a wonderful and fun activity and is open to riders at any level.

See the links at the bottom of the page for more information about how IHSA showing works and about our region specifically.

RQ stables located in New Castle, PA is home of the Westminster College Equestrian Team. The stables are approximately ten minutes from campus. Members usually carpool to lessons and thus having your own transportation is certainly not a requirement to membership.

RQ Stables facilities include:

  • 60' x 180' outdoor arena
  • 80' x 120' indoor arena
  • Heated viewing room
  • Cross country course and trails
  • 12' x 12' stalls
  • 9 large pastures

Lesson horses are provided for all members of the equestrian team. If team members choose to do so they may also ride and board their own horses at RQ. Arrangements can be made directly with RQ stables. Ownership of your own horse is certainly not a requirement, however.

For more information follow the link at the bottom of the page to RQ Stables' website.
