H1N1 Update

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

To the Campus Community:

It has been another busy day at the Student Health Center as we tested 16 students for influenza. Of those tested, 6 tested positive and have gone home to recover.

All of the students who tested positive for influenza were also tested for the H1N1 virus. We have not received any results for that testing as yet.

Each student who tests positive for influenza is asked to give us a list of their close contacts here at Westminster. Close contacts include those the student lives with, boyfriends and girlfriends of the student, and anyone that student shares utensils with. The Health Center sends emails to students listed as close contacts to make them aware that they need to be alert to the symptoms of influenza.

The symptoms of novel H1N1 flu virus are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A significant number of people who have been infected with this virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting.

Take care and stay healthy.
