THE COLLEGE BOOKSTORE, located on the first and second levels of McKelvey Campus Center, is the area where students can purchase books, academic supplies, and other personal items from T-shirts and College banners to posters and greeting cards.

The bookstore hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays when classes are in session. The bookstore will have extended hours on special Saturdays as advertised.

THE BUSINESS OFFICE is located in 205/206 Old Main. The office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Cashier’s window hours are 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Business Office staff is available to receive payments and to help students with questions about student account charges and credits, and other financial matters during these hours.

CHECK CASHING

Since the College does not provide a check cashing service, the following on- and off-campus options are suggested:

Small amounts of cash may be obtained at the College bookstore by writing payment checks for up to $10.00 beyond the value of items purchased, provided that the purchase value is $5.00 or more.

The local branch of Sky Bank, 108 South Market Street, will cash personal checks in amounts up to $25 from out-of-town banks with the presentation of a student ID card. They will also cash College payroll checks and government checks, also with a College ID.  Hours are Monday through Thursday: 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Friday 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; and Saturday 9:00 a.m. – noon.

The local branch of The First National Bank of Slippery Rock, 135 East Neshannock Avenue, will cash College payroll checks and government checks with proper identification.  Hours are Monday through Thursday:  9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. – noon.  For your convenience, a drive-through ATM machine includes postage stamps for sale.  Low cost checking and savings accounts are available at this branch, a member of the FREEDOM ATM ALLIANCE, a surcharge-free network of banks located throughout Lawrence, Butler, Mercer, and Allegheny counties.

The three closest MAC machine locations are on the first level of the McKelvey Campus Center and at both local banks mentioned above.

Checking and savings accounts are available at the local banks and at other banking institutions within a 15-minute drive.

IDENTIFICATION CARDS
A Titan Card is issued to each incoming first-year or transfer student during orientation and serves as the student’s debit card for purchases at the Food Service locations, Bookstore,
and vending machines. It also serves as a meal card for students on a meal plan, provides identification for check cashing and admittance to athletic and cultural events, access to checkout of library materials, and access to one’s residence hall (in lieu of outside door key). Finally, it is the student’s general off-campus identification.

Replacement fee for a lost Titan Card is $20.

Complete information is available at the Titan Card Office located on the second level of McKelvey Campus Center.

HEALTH INSURANCE
All students are asked to read the brochure titled Student Health Program, which is sent annually to all students each July. The student insurance program is divided into two parts. Part I is a $500 mandatory accident policy that provides first dollar coverage on accidents on- or off-campus. Part II is a $500 optional medical sickness and major medical policy that also provides first dollar coverage on any sickness. Part I is required of all students, and Part II is optional. Students wanting Part II coverage should complete the enrollment blank in the brochure and mail it as instructed.

A student who does not consult the College Student Health Center (SHC) staff will be considered a private patient and will be charged accordingly by any doctor giving treatment.

Insurance claim forms and instructions on claim procedure are available at the SHC or the Titan Card Office in McKelvey Campus Center. Written notice of a claim must be filed with the insurance company within 20 days after the occurrence or commencement of any loss covered by the policy. Written proof of loss (medical bills) must be furnished within 90 days following the date of such loss.

It is the responsibility of the student to file notice of loss and to present all bills.  (Both of these requirements may be completed through the SHC or the Titan Card Office in McKelvey Campus Center.) Failure to comply may result in denial of responsibility for payment of the claim by the insurance company. The insurer is relieved of any liability resulting from the insured failing to carry out this responsibility.

Students graduating from Westminster or withdrawing for any reason must pay all outstanding medical bills prior to official clearance. Any portion subsequently covered by insurance will be refunded to the student.

STUDENT TELEPHONE SERVICE

Westminster College provides student telephone service through a fully electronic switching system tied into both the Verizon and Bell Telephone systems. Student rooms are equipped with a modular jack; students are expected to supply their own telephone instrument. Outgoing calls may be direct-dialed. Incoming calls may be directly routed to the student’s room by use of Direct Inward Dialing (DID) or pass through the switchboard if the DID number is not used. The rules and regulations pertinent to the phone system are listed in the Westminster College Student Telephone Service Guide.

CHAPEL OFFICE
As a church-related, liberal arts college, Westminster is dedicated to the conviction that the pursuit of academic excellence and growth in Christian faith are complementary.

The religious program is Christian in orientation, and by nature it is pluralistic. The belief that various theological positions contain truth and, therefore, are necessary for growth toward completeness, is a basic principle of the program. It is the goal of the Chaplain’s Office that those who so desire may find the atmosphere, program, and encouragement to mature in the Christian faith. This growth may be accomplished by commitment to Jesus Christ and His kingdom, regardless of a person’s denominational background.

One dimension of Christian growth is found through worship that is both a corporate and personal experience at Westminster. In addition, members of the College community, through a variety of on- and off-campus events, are offered opportunities to work toward realizing the value of the Christian college experience for their own individual lives.

WEEKLY WORSHIP SERVICES IN THE CHAPEL

Under the direction of the Chaplain, three weekly worship services are held in Wallace Memorial Chapel. Chapel services are scheduled for 11:40 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays; Vespers are held at 7 p.m. on Sundays.

FAITH AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Students are offered a wide variety of meaningful opportunities to grow in their faith. These opportunities include a number of groups that meet on a weekly basis: Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Seekers College Fellowship, Newman Club, and Gospel Choir.  There are also opportunities to learn and grow through small group Bible
studies and thematic retreats.  Students may also participate in volunteer service programs, Habitat for Humanity projects, and on Service Teams that regularly work on- and off-campus.

COMMUNITY WORSHIP

Students are encouraged to attend the church or synagogue of their choice. Catholic Mass is celebrated Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. and on holy days in Wallace Memorial Chapel.

COUNSELING

The Chaplain, in addition to coordinating campus religious events, is also available for counseling. The  Chaplain’s Office is located in 316 Old Main.

THE LEARNING CENTER is open to all students of the College, and offers one-on-one instruction that would not ordinarily be included in their classes:  assistance in reading and study strategies, writing skills, and any discipline-specific content area. Students needing help with basic skills improvement, students wanting to improve already existing skills, and students wishing to strengthen advanced skills are encouraged to use this service.

GOT MAIL?

 VOICEMAIL, E-MAIL, & SNAIL MAIL

College offices use e-mail and campus mail as official means of communicating with students.  Students are responsible for information provided through those means.

COMPUTING SERVICES

TitanNet Network

Information Systems staff members operate the campus-wide TitanNet network (including campus Internet links and five public PC labs) and provide other computing and telecommunications services to the campus.  Information Systems offices are located on the first floor of Hoyt.  Public PC labs are:  Math/CS on the ground floor of Hoyt with 21 PCs; Patterson on the second floor of Patterson Hall with 26 PCs; Econ/Business on the second floor of Old Main with 13 PCs; McGill Lab in McGill Library with 26 PCs; and a Graphics Lab on the second floor of Thompson-Clark with 18 PCs.  Microsoft Office, Netscape, and Groupwise e-mail are standard applications available in all public labs.

In addition, curricular applications such as statistics programs and programming languages may be used in labs. Hours of operation are posted at all lab locations. Student proctors are available in labs at specified times to assist users.

Other departments also have computing resources available for students.  Contact individual departments for availability of this equipment and software.

The TitanNet network also includes more than sixteen technology-enhanced classrooms with audio/video equipment, projectors and computing resources available for student and faculty group presentations. The network extends to every residence hall room so students with suitably equipped computers can access e-mail, Internet, and other network resources from their rooms. Every student automatically receives a personal network account on TitanNet with space for storing personal files and folders for sharing course information with instructors and other students.

MAIL SERVICE

U.S. Postal Service mail is delivered to the mailroom on the first level of the McKelvey Campus Center Monday through Saturday and is placed in student boxes every day except Sunday.  All students, both residents and commuters, are required to have a mailbox on campus.

Students’ mailing addresses should read as follows:
  Name
  Box Number
  Westminster College
  New Wilmington, PA 16172-0001
Since U.S. mail and the campus mail are delivered to each student’s mailbox, students are expected to check their mailboxes daily. Official notices sent through the mail and placed in a student’s mailbox will be considered delivered.

Residents should insist that any money sent or received through the mail be in the form of money orders or checks.  The College cannot be responsible for claims regarding lost or stolen mail. These claims will be handled at the New Wilmington Post Office.

An intracampus mail system is available to all students. Mail should carry the name of the student and box number. Items to be mailed must be at least 33 square inches or one-third sheet of 8 1/2” x 11” paper.  If an item needs to be folded, it must be larger than 33 square inches or approximately one-half sheet of sheet of 8 1/2” x 11” paper. For mail over 10 pieces, the items must be in mailbox order and rubber banded. Intracampus mail may be deposited at the mailroom.

Student organizations may send representatives to the mailroom Monday through Friday from 3 – 4 p.m. to stuff flyers in the student mailboxes.

Keys are issued to each student at the beginning of the year. The fee for a replacement key is $5. Stamps may be purchased weekdays from 8:15 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the mailroom.

UPS or other freight service packages must be addressed to the student’s mailbox. Students will receive a package card in their mailboxes to inform them that a package has arrived.

Westminster College provides student telephone service through a fully electronic switching system tied into both the Verizon and Bell Telephone systems. Student rooms are equipped with a modular jack; students are expected to supply their own telephone instrument. Outgoing calls may be direct-dialed. MOTORPOOL
The College has a motorpool consisting of four cars and four 15-passenger vans. These vehicles can be reserved at the Physical Plant Office as transportation to and from College-sanctioned functions or activities. Any student wishing to drive a motorpool vehicle must be listed as an approved driver. To receive driver approval, students must file an application each academic year with the Business Manager, located in the Business Office on the second floor of Old Main.  All vehicle cancellations must be made in writing or through e-mail communication.

THE REGISTRAR'S OFFICE is located in 107 Old Main. The Registrar and staff are available for help with questions regarding students’ academic records, academic requirements, and progress towards graduation. The office maintains academic records, produces official transcripts, publishes class schedules, schedules all classrooms, verifies student enrollment, and coordinates course registration and schedule changes.

FINANCIAL AID
In most cases, financial need is the sole criterion for financial assistance.  The exceptions are the Trustee’s Scholarships, Tower Scholarship, Westminster Scholarship, President’s Scholarship, Honor Scholarships, and some Activity Grants.

Financial need is the difference between family contribution (parental and student) and the total cost, which includes tuition, fees, room, board, books, and personal expenses.

Financial aid packages are based on full-time enrollment.  Students must check with the Financial Aid office if they drop below 12 semester hours for fall or spring.

A financial aid brochure is available in Remick Admissions House.

VETERANS’ AFFAIRS

For information on Veterans’ Affairs, contact the Director of Financial Aid.

PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT

Students desiring part-time employment should seek information from the Financial Aid Office in Remick Admissions House.

Upperclass fraternity members living on campus may choose to join their fraternity eating club with the approval of the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.

The dining service makes every effort to provide meals for those with special medical concerns.  Those who wish to be exempt from campus dining due to medical reasons must first obtain the Board Plan Exemption Request Form located at the Office of Student Affairs. The student’s M.D. or D.O. must complete this form before any determination is made.  A meeting with the Dean of Student Affairs to discuss the request or possible alternatives may also be required.
