Project Malawi is an ongoing project that was developed for the service learning component of BIO 113: Biology of Infectious Disease (Click here to see a copy of the syllabus)

We have been working with our community partner; Ms. Wezzie Osman, from Kalibu Academy, Blantyre, Malawi, on Project Malawi for two years. The goal of the project is for students of BIO 113 to learn about the scientific process and about microbiology, by making hands-on kits for microbiology lab classes at Kalibu Academy. The kits and protocols are then shipped to Kalibu Academy, where they are tested by students there. Once the testing is complete, Kalibu Acadmy students use the kits to demonstrate simple experiments to children in their community, and to demonstrate what types of organisms are living in their community water supply. We recently sent specialized culture media to the students so that they can test their local water supply for pathogenic organisms such as Chloera, Salmonella and E. coli. These organisms are common causes of disease in Malawi and frequesntly contminate drinking water, particularly during the rainy seasons. Click here to see a sample protocol. For a more detailed escription of the project, see our article in the Journal for Civic Commitment

Students of BIO 113 also carry out fundraising projects to buy the equipment needed to develop the kits. So far, students have raised more than $2000 from their peers ans professors, the local community and local companies. Our fundraising efforts are continuous; every dollar helps.
