Training's been
very down--disc problem in lower back (and winter travel and
busy times). This race re-aggravated it and put me
down for a good week or so. Given all that and my
faster final lap, I'm happy with this result. Tough
age group here. Went very easy on the mile, as my back
was hurting by the end of the 10 mile--hard to do much. |

Left hip is still
a problem (related to back trouble?), so I decided to try to
use this race to practice my hoped-for pace at JC Stone in a
month. I'd like to run 7:30's there, so I hung with
the 7:30 pace group for the first 5-6 miles. It was
weird to go out that slowly. Pace group was lagging a
bit by mile 6, so somewhere around there I took off on my
own. Hip never blew up, pain was up and down, but
never debilitating (like last year at this race), so I
managed to hold really steady at ~7:30 pace. I even
managed a negative split, which I basically never do.
Given the trouble I've had so far this year, I'm really
happy with how this went. |

it demolished my marathon PR. But by then my legs were
pretty locked up, as that 5th loop was in 9 minute mile

up for a big kick to pass and put a full minute on 9th place

well. Just got some dead legs for a couple of

overall there that I should have been moving for.
Pretty sure my main problem was not enough

lesson learned here. Don't do ultras on back-to-back

5-mile loop was done. Stubbornness and cajoling from
friends got me through 7 loops, but they were bad.
Quit after about 7.5 hours. Compounded my troubles by
going out initially at what was probably a slightly too-fast
pace, and honestly, training for this kind of effort hasn't
been what I wanted. Great course, the kind that makes
you want to go back for redemption. Still feel bad
about quitting with time on the clock...Probably the smart

about that does not add up--everyone was at least 3-4

opening loop was different this year, and it was pretty
hilly, but was it also long--or was last year's short? Anyway, felt terrific through the 8.6 mile split (at 6:40/ pace). Shortly thereafter, started to feel a cramp in the left hamstring. Eventually low fitness and the early faster running caught
up with me, and I had some significant hamstring

was just a little on the fast side of where I wanted to
be. Next 5 miles in 33:54 (6:47 pace), which was
basically the pace I wanted to be running. So through
10 miles, everything felt pretty good. Somewhere in
the 3rd lap I started to slow down, and I hit that 5 mile
lap in 37:41 (7:32 pace), definitely slower than intended,
but I still felt ok. Around mile 16, I felt like both
legs were going to cramp up if I kept running, so I stopped
to walk and walked most of the next two miles. A gel
just before mile 18 let me jog a lot of the last two
miles. So that last lap was in 1:02:15 (12:27
pace!). I had trouble getting sports drinks/gels from
the aid stations most of the race and I think my blood
glucose concentrations tanked. Lesson: carry
gels with you even if the race advertises that it will have
gels at aid stations. Anyway, I guess this is a PR for both 15 miles (1:44:30) and 20 miles (2:46:44) since I've never raced those distances before. The 20 mile is obviously weak, and the 15 mile equates to about 1:30:36 for a half-marathon (McMillan) so is not as strong of a time as my half-marathon PR. |

Had about three
good weeks of training (15-20 miles in each of those weeks).
So I wasn't counting on much. A nice surprise to
run pretty strong for this point in training. This is
a nice course. There's a pretty ugly hill on it that
you hit twice, but it was bearable. Ran the first
"mile" in 5:45? Despite the presence of a good piece
of downhill in that first mile, that still seems a little
unlikely. This morning's weather was perfect.
Won my age group (30-34). |

Well, this was a
nice surprise. Haven't run faster than this since
1998. Took out really fast for the first mile again.
Need to back off that a bit probably. This was a
Wednesday evening race--kind of hot and muggy, so far from
ideal conditions. Need to start my finishing kick
earlier. |

OK! This
was a real breakthrough. Not a PR, but this course was
hilly! I held onto the guy who eventually took 5th in
the beginning, then passed him just after an uphill around
mile 2. He got past me again with less than a
half-mile left. I hung with him for a while, but
couldn't keep it up all the way in. Still, this was
only 14 seconds off of a PR, and the hills out there were
pretty tough. Promising! |

This wasn't a bad race, though
it was raining pretty heavily through most of it.
However, this course was definitely long.
My guess it was pretty close to 1/4 mile too long,
based on my own time and the times of others. Age
group award was funny--1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th were all
in my age group. Legs felt a little flat. |

Well, this was interesting. Took out
the first (way downhill) mile in 5:55! Yikes!
But things were going ok at mile 9 still.
Running just a few seconds faster than 63 min, right
on top of 7 min pace. Even slowing as I was, the
finish should have been ok. Somewhere around 9.5
miles, I hear a loud crack ahead of me and the telephone
wires start shaking. Someone drove off the road maybe
100m ahead of me and hit a telephone pole. So the guy
ahead of me goes to the car to help and I turn around and
race back to the last water stop to get someone to call 911.
That was pretty much it for me. I lost a bunch
of time directly because of running back, and since I ran
back fast, it largely burned out what little my legs had
left. So, the remaining ~3+ miles were kinda bad, and
the time didn't turn out too good. If not for the
turnaround, this would definitely have been a PR. Oh
well. Next time. |

What a hill in the final ~1.5 miles of this monster. A race following the pattern of late last year-- consistent effort throughout even if the final result is something of a disappointment. The whole family came with me and ran a 3K fun run. The girls are good little runners. | 16th |

The hill in this race is not to be believed. However, since my training at this point is essentially nonexistent, I'm somewhat surprised to have done even this well on this course. Reasonably happy with my racing, given the extreme lack of training I've been doing. My left knee has continued to have problems, limiting my running hugely. This is why I ran neither open 3000 or 1500. However, some of my race strategy left much to be desired--too slow early in the open 1/4, too slow reacting to a late passer in both races. Emma ran here too. She ran an 11.57 55m, but she ran a terrific 2:15 for the 400m! Her 200m split beat her open 200m time last month. All in attendence were amazed at the tiny little girl running so well. | 3rd

Given my time in the 1000m, I should have just run the mile today--that time extrapolates to a PR mile. Had never run 1000m before, so technically that's a PR too, but not very satisfying. Had a slight hamstring pull in left leg from first lap of 1000m, caused me to go pretty easy most of both races. Emma's 55m was allegedly in 14.6. I'm not sure about that one. | 6th

A fun day at the track with the children. The girls ran around a bunch and had fun. I'd never run a 1500m before, but my time corresponds to a PR (<5:25?) in the mile (old PR dates back to a solo time trial in 1992? = 5:26). Anyway, I was pretty happy with it. | 9th? |

1:06:03 | What a crappy race! Why they didn't include the timing chip in the race packet is a continuing mystery. I lost my warmup time to standing in line waiting for a chip. Another track meet, another time to be really out of training. I haven't really run significant mileage since July! Not bad, given that. Mile race really killed my 200--felt legs failing around final curve--and I was in lane 7. Better luck next time. Emma ran a 14.30 55m, which would have been faster but for lane confusion problems. She ran the 200m in 62.1, which again would have been faster but for confusion at the finish line. | 19th
