Left first aid station at 10.2 mi at 1:55:27.  Slow on purpose, but maybe not slow enough?  Left Jennings aid station (15.5 mi) 2:54:32.  Left 21.2 mi aid station at 4:06:44.  Left 29.4 mi aid station at 5:57:29.  Left it again inbound after turnaround (32 mi) at 6:40:14.  Departed final aid station (40.2 mi) at 8:36:11.  Pretty much the time I expected.  Hip hurting for much of Jan/Feb.  Not in shape, haven't run longer than 12 mi all year.  Total mileage very low.  Hips and back were a problem mid-race, but recovered for the last 5-6 miles so that I was running OK again at the end.  About 1hr45 slower than two years ago.  Lots of work to do if I want to do more than "enjoy the journey" as I tried to do today.

Training's been very down--disc problem in lower back (and winter travel and busy times).  This race re-aggravated it and put me down for a good week or so.  Given all that and my faster final lap, I'm happy with this result.  Tough age group here.  Went very easy on the mile, as my back was hurting by the end of the 10 mile--hard to do much.

Left hip is still a problem (related to back trouble?), so I decided to try to use this race to practice my hoped-for pace at JC Stone in a month.  I'd like to run 7:30's there, so I hung with the 7:30 pace group for the first 5-6 miles.  It was weird to go out that slowly.  Pace group was lagging a bit by mile 6, so somewhere around there I took off on my own.  Hip never blew up, pain was up and down, but never debilitating (like last year at this race), so I managed to hold really steady at ~7:30 pace.  I even managed a negative split, which I basically never do.  Given the trouble I've had so far this year, I'm really happy with how this went.

So disappointed to miss this race.  Disc problem evolved into painful ruptured disc, requiring surgery.  This race was pre-surgery.  Did a "50 hours lying flat on my back" event instead.

Very muddy, which made it tough going.  Fitness was very bad after just two months of running post-surgery.  Foolishly thought I would be closer to healthy.   Felt good for three loops, fourth loop not bad, loops 5 and 6 weren't fun any more.  6:20 for 30 mi.  Decided it just wasn't worth pushing on.                       20th

Still not ready for this kind of distance.  No long runs other than RBTS heading into this.  Went out at what I thought was a relaxed pace, in 76th at first aid station.  Still 91st by 5th aid station, 125th by 8th aid station, 158th by 12th aid station at mile ~60.   Thought I still had a chance at finishing before the time limit at that point.  By the 13th aid station at ~65 mile, I arrived in 175th place, but I was trudging ~30min miles and the math said I'd miss a cutoff sooner or later, so I quit there.  Not happy about it.

Lots of road on this trail course, but not as much as last year's course.  A few sections that weren't marked great, so I lost some time looking for the "trail", but not nearly as much time as some runners!  Probably <10 minutes?  This makes two out of three puzzle pieces for me--I'll get the last one if I go back next year.  Ran with Pat K. for most of the first 30 miles.  Started to feel the sun and the hills and just had to drop it down a notch from there.  Maintained a decent pace for most of the rest of it.  Still by far a good sign for post-surgery recovery.

Similar to Burning River.  Things were going OK, albeit slow, after AS 3 on the second loop.  Around 2 miles from AS 4 (~mi 60 overall), I hit the slow trudge-walk again, where I wasn't close to making 20min miles walking pace (even on flat ground).  Back muscles were having trouble holding my torso upright.  Just couldn't bring myself to leave AS 4 even though there was a ton of time left on the clock.  Still not happy about it.

Right hip was hurting by the end of loop 2, quite a bit by the end of loop 3, got a little better during loop 4.  ~Marathon split at 26.1 mi was at 3:23:45, so whatever my true marathon split was, it demolished my marathon PR.  But by then my legs were pretty locked up, as that 5th loop was in 9 minute mile pace.  6th loop in 9.5 min mile pace, but I picked it up for a big kick to pass and put a full minute on 9th place over about the last 400 m or so.  I thought I'd be able to get under 4 hours, but my hips kept me from that.  Still, a way better day than either of my marathons.  And, as it's my first road 50k, PR.

First section 10.2 mi in 1:35:57.  Left aid station 1:37:21.  Arrived at Jennings aid station (15.5 mi) 2:28:45.  Left aid station 2:29:12.  Left 21.2 mi aid station at ~3:28:37.  Left 29.4 mi aid station at 5:01:59.  Left it again inbound after turnaround (32 mi) at 5:32:28.  Arrived at final aid station (40.2 mi) at 7:06:12 and departed 7:10:41.  Seems like my early pace was a little too fast.  No specific physical breakdowns--hips, knees, achilles all behaved pretty well.  Just got some dead legs for a couple of several-mile stretches.  Didn't get all my in and out times at aid stations, but I may have wasted a few minutes overall there that I should have been moving for.  Pretty sure my main problem was not enough preparation.  Not enough long runs, not enough runs on the terrain.  Still, this was within the goal I had set for myself (< 10 hr), it was pretty close to the fastest time I had imagined for myself (~9 hr), and of course it is a PR as it's the longest distance I've ever run.

So...important lesson learned here.  Don't do ultras on back-to-back weekends.  I was so not recovered from last weekend's race.  My quads felt totally trashed before the 4th 5-mile loop was done.  Stubbornness and cajoling from friends got me through 7 loops, but they were bad.  Quit after about 7.5 hours.  Compounded my troubles by going out initially at what was probably a slightly too-fast pace, and honestly, training for this kind of effort hasn't been what I wanted.  Great course, the kind that makes you want to go back for redemption.  Still feel bad about quitting with time on the clock...Probably the smart choice, but that doesn't make it any easier.

Very cold!  The only real trouble, though, was the difficult section of the course where the road hadn't been plowed.  My guess is that's what slowed people down so much.  Hard to tell exactly, but it looks like fast people were slowed by something like 4-8 minutes relative to last year.  So I can't really tell whether this was a good time for me in those conditions or not...  Glad I went though!  As for the mile, I was so stiff that I was barely running the first half, more like a slog.  Loosened up as we went.

Something goofy about the 3.6 miles before we hit the 3x5mile loops.  Last year, I ran the first 3.6 miles in 21:11.  The winner ran it in 18:42.  This year, I ran the first 3.6 miles in 24:01.  The winner ran it in 22:39.  Something about that does not add up--everyone was at least 3-4 minutes slower for the first loop this year?  The opening loop was different this year, and it was pretty hilly, but was it also long--or was last year's short?

Anyway, felt terrific through the 8.6 mile split (at 6:40/ pace).  Shortly thereafter, started to feel a cramp in the left hamstring.  Backed off the pace to prevent it from seizing up completely.  Third loop was still OK, but 4th loop slowed a lot.  Managed to keep from total muscle failure though.

Right knee flared up already before the first aid station.  I discovered that running fast hurt a lot less than running slow, so I alternated walking and running hard for a while.  Had some Advil at AS1, and that may have helped a lot--before long, the pain was very manageable.  Eventually low fitness and the early faster running caught up with me, and I had some significant hamstring cramps.  Given the past 4-5 months, I'm pretty happy with this performance.  This course was definitely the hardest of the four 50k trails races I've done this year, so this is definitely a better result than either of the last two races.  Achilles didn't seem to hurt so much this time.

Cold day, but the course was clear, and I chose the right clothes, so that was good.  Hit the 5 mile mark in 32:56 (6:35 pace), which was just a little on the fast side of where I wanted to be.  Next 5 miles in 33:54 (6:47 pace), which was basically the pace I wanted to be running.  So through 10 miles, everything felt pretty good.  Somewhere in the 3rd lap I started to slow down, and I hit that 5 mile lap in 37:41 (7:32 pace), definitely slower than intended, but I still felt ok.  Around mile 16, I felt like both legs were going to cramp up if I kept running, so I stopped to walk and walked most of the next two miles.  A gel just before mile 18 let me jog a lot of the last two miles.  So that last lap was in 1:02:15 (12:27 pace!).  I had trouble getting sports drinks/gels from the aid stations most of the race and I think my blood glucose concentrations tanked.  Lesson:  carry gels with you even if the race advertises that it will have gels at aid stations.
Anyway, I guess this is a PR for both 15 miles (1:44:30) and 20 miles (2:46:44) since I've never raced those distances before.  The 20 mile is obviously weak, and the 15 mile equates to about 1:30:36 for a half-marathon (McMillan) so is not as strong of a time as my half-marathon PR.

Felt absolutely great for the first 16 or so miles, then started to hamstring cramp -- that slowed me down near the end, where I was passed by 5 guys in the last lap.  Definitely a better result than the 15-mile or 20-mile results from last month though, and since it is a new distance anyway -- PR.  Split at 13.6 miles was 1:29:18, which equates to a half-marathon in just under 1:26.  So I undoubtedly broke my half-marathon PR from last year on the way to this.  (Official results show me in 17th, but it looks like the guy officially in 15th didn't actually run the last lap, so I'm saying 16th for me.)

Had about three good weeks of training (15-20 miles in each of those weeks).  So I wasn't counting on much.  A nice surprise to run pretty strong for this point in training.  This is a nice course.  There's a pretty ugly hill on it that you hit twice, but it was bearable.  Ran the first "mile" in 5:45?  Despite the presence of a good piece of downhill in that first mile, that still seems a little unlikely.  This morning's weather was perfect.  Won my age group (30-34).

Pretty bad hill at about 2.2 mi.  Also, I think I took out too fast.

Well, this was interesting.  Took out the first (way downhill) mile in 5:55!  Yikes!  But things were going ok at mile 9 still.  Running just a few seconds faster than 63 min, right on top of 7 min pace.  Even slowing as I was, the finish should have been ok.  Somewhere around 9.5 miles, I hear a loud crack ahead of me and the telephone wires start shaking.  Someone drove off the road maybe 100m ahead of me and hit a telephone pole.  So the guy ahead of me goes to the car to help and I turn around and race back to the last water stop to get someone to call 911.  That was pretty much it for me.  I lost a bunch of time directly because of running back, and since I ran back fast, it largely burned out what little my legs had left.  So, the remaining ~3+ miles were kinda bad, and the time didn't turn out too good.  If not for the turnaround, this would definitely have been a PR.  Oh well.  Next time.

Nice race.  Felt good.  But I got outkicked by TWO guys at the end.  I had pretty much spent what I had just to catch one of them, so oh well.

I should have caught the guy in 4th, but I didn't have the guts to go for it.  Boo!   On a happy note, Chessa walked/ran a 41:23 to get third in the under12 age group.  Emma walked/ran a 43:50 to get fourth in the under 12 age group.  Alton walked a 45:31 to get second in the boys' under12 age group, and Tauni finished with him in 45:32.  Last race of the Lawrence County Quad series.  I was second in the quad championship results!  Good for me!

My, it has been awhile, hasn't it?  I've been running for maybe 1.5 - 2 months again.  Training is progressing, albeit slowly.  My goal was 21:00, but it's still hard to come in at such slow times.  Hopefully next race will be considerably better.  Won my age group (31-35).

A better time (best since 2000 ...I'm slowly getting back into shape.  Hope to get another shot at a race this year.  Won my age group again (21-30).  This was a really conveniently located race, and it was quite well-organized, especially given that it's a first-time event.  This will have to have a regular place on my schedule.

On Westminster campus.  Pretty cold today--mid 30s during the race.  Took out too fast (~6:10 for the first mile), and that cost me later.  Another good race.  If I could get my mileage up above averaging about 10/week, I might be able to get back to better times again...I hope.

My first race after moving to Pennsylvania.  In addition, this race was just a couple of weeks after our move to the new house.  Training has been spotty so far.  A good positive start to racing here in our new home, though naturally slower than where I want to be.

What a hill in the final ~1.5 miles of this monster.  A race following the pattern of late last year-- consistent effort throughout even if the final result is something of a disappointment.  The whole family came with me and ran a 3K fun run.  The girls are good little runners. 16th

The hill in this race is not to be believed.  However, since my training at this point is essentially nonexistent, I'm somewhat surprised to have done even this well on this course.  At least it was another year where I neither fell nor got lost.  The whole family came with me again for a 1 mile fun run. 34th

Reasonably happy with my racing, given the extreme lack of training I've been doing.  My left knee has continued to have problems, limiting my running hugely.  This is why I ran neither open 3000 or 1500.  However, some of my race strategy left much to be desired--too slow early in the open 1/4, too slow reacting to a late passer in both races.  Emma ran here too.  She ran an 11.57 55m, but she ran a terrific 2:15 for the 400m!  Her 200m split beat her open 200m time last month.  All in attendence were amazed at the tiny little girl running so well. 3rd

Given my time in the 1000m, I should have just run the mile today--that time extrapolates to a PR mile.  Had never run 1000m before, so technically that's a PR too, but not very satisfying.  Had a slight hamstring pull in left leg from first lap of 1000m, caused me to go pretty easy most of both races.  Emma's 55m was allegedly in 14.6.  I'm not sure about that one. 6th

A fun day at the track with the children.  The girls ran around a bunch and had fun.  I'd never run a 1500m before, but my time corresponds to a PR (<5:25?) in the mile (old PR dates back to a solo time trial in 1992? = 5:26).  Anyway, I was pretty happy with it. 9th?

1:06:03 What a crappy race!  Why they didn't include the timing chip in the race packet is a continuing mystery.  I lost my warmup time to standing in line waiting for a chip.  I got the chip 3 minutes before the start of the race!  I ran to my correct start corral and was off.  Perhaps the inadequate warmup explains the poor time and the multitudinous injuries I suffered. 904th

Another track meet, another time to be really out of training.  I haven't really run significant mileage since July!  Not bad, given that.  Mile race really killed my 200--felt legs failing around final curve--and I was in lane 7.  Better luck next time.  Emma ran a 14.30 55m, which would have been faster but for lane confusion problems.  She ran the 200m in 62.1, which again would have been faster but for confusion at the finish line. 19th

Things went great for the first 10 miles, then I fell apart.  I think my last mile took something like 13 minutes.  I screwed up on a big downhill section around miles 5-6 when I put down two consecutive miles in sub-6:00 pace.  Very stupid.  A very disappointing time. Still, new distance = PR. 51st
