Special Worship Opportunities 2011-2012


Wondering Wandering Worship
Ever wonder what worship is like in a cathedral, at a synagogue, or in a mosque?  What’s the difference between the way Presbyterians and Baptists worship, or Lutherans and an African American congregation?  How about a small church or a non-denominational church?  How about Catholic mass and a Taize service or a new church development and an emergent church?  How about a visit to a mosque and your home place of worship?  On the second and fourth weekends of each month, normally on a Sunday morning, we will leave campus and wander (make our way) to places of worship around Western PA and Eastern Ohio to learn about worship and faith traditions from leaders at the particular places of worship, spend time with the worshipping community, then debrief on the way home as we stop for lunch or a snack.  Some weeks we will go on Friday or Saturday evening as that is when particular communities worship.  One week we will travel to Pittsburgh to a Taize service on Wednesday evening.   If interested contact the Chapel Office (724-946-7117) and watch for travel dates and locations.

Special Speakers 2011-2012

We are continually adding speakers and events to your Campus Ministry program, please return periodically to view our schedule of speakers and/or events.

International Peacemaker Speakers:  Dr. Emad Ramzy Philobbos from Egypt will be our guest October 6-10, 2011.   Dr. Philobbos will be speaking in Chapel on Friday, October 7th at 11:40 AM and will also be our guest preacher at Vespers on Sunday, October 9th at 7:00 PM.  Dr. Emad is a Professor Emeritus of Geology at Assiut University in Upper Egypt. He is involved in the Forum of Inter-cultural Dialogue run by the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services, and in establishing a Center for Capacity Building and Social Cohesion to serve the Egyptian, Middle Eastern and North African potentional leaders in churches and civic circles.  Emad was General Secretary of the Protestant Community in Egypt and is now a board member for hte Presbyterian Seminary in Cairo.  He is married and has a daughter, a son, and four grandchildren.

Seder Meal - Celebrating our Judeo-Christian tradition the Westminster community gathers each year to experience the Jewish tradition of Seder.  Attendees will move through the parts of the Seder liturgy and share in traditional Jewish Seder foods. The Seder for this academic year will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 beginning at 5:30 PM in the Witherspoon Maple Room.  Space is limited to 75 and reservations are required. Reservation request deadline is Tuesday, March 27, 2012. There is no charge for this event, unless you make a reservation and then don't attend, you will then be charged $18.00 for your meal.

Previous Guest Speakers:  David Newell aka "Mr. McFeely" from Mister Roger's Neighborhood, Tunch Ilkin (former Pittsburgh Steeler, 1980-1992 and current radio analyst for the Pittsburgh Steelers), Roberto Clemente Jr. (motivational speaker:  "Sportsmanship:  On a Team, On Your Own"), Rev. Augustin Kabongo (International Peacemaker from the Democratic Republic of the Congo), Rev. Yousif Matar Kodi (International Peacemaker from Sudan) and Karla Ramos-Amaya (International Peacemaker from El Salvador).
