Questions

I have installed TitanNET and I am still unable to connect to the Internet or Novell. What is the problem?
If you are unable to use the network after installing this year's software, please perform the following tests.
  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Make sure your phone works. Many students often mistakenly plug their phone into their network jack and vice versa.
  3. Look at your computer where the network cable plugs in. You should see lights (usually yellow and/or green). If you don't then there is a problem with your connection. Try another cable. If it doesn't work, try your roommate's port - if it works, email titannet with your name, extension, and port number.
  4. Verify you have a 10.xx.xx.xx IP address:
    • Click Start then Run
    • Type cmd and press OK
    • When the black window appears type ipconfig and press enter.
    • Look for the line that says IP Address. The address should start with a 10
    • If the address does not start with a 10, type ipconfig /release and press enter. Then type ipconfig /renew and the press enter.

I have been told that my port has been having problems. When will this be resolved?
All issues with the ports on campus should have been resolved. Please follow the troubleshooting steps listed here. If these steps do not resolve the problem, please email us your port number and we will look into it.

Why do I have to log on to Border Manager every time I go to a new web page?
Border Manager is Westminster College's proxy server. To avoid having to log into it, be sure to log on to Novell. If you are logged into Novell, there should be a red key in the system tray. If the key is there, make sure you have either configured your firewall or turned it off. If you are still having problems, email us.

I receive a tree/server not found message when I log on. How do I fix this?
Those who are receiving ?unable to connect to tree/server? errors: if your PC is using Windows XP, your Internet Connection Firewall should be disabled. The attachment to this message will instruct you how to disable the Internet firewall. To view the document call up Microsoft Word, open file, choose view then print layout.

I purchased my computer though the school and would like it to be restored to the way it was when I purchased it. How do I go about this?
If you purchased an IBM laptop through the school, you can bring it down to the Technicians' Desk and ask to have it "reimaged," or restored to an original configuration plus required updates. Please back up anything and everything that you wish to keep, as the contents of the hard drive will be completely overwritten. Note that you do not need to back up your N: and R: drives, as they are networked drives and will not be touched during the reimaging process.

If you have a Dell laptop purchased through the school, Dell provided you with a set of restore CDs. You can use these restore CDs to return your computer to the original, factory configuration. The Technicians' Desk cannot perform this task, as it does not have the restore CDs needed for each individual computer. Don't forget to back up the contents of your hard drive, as they will be overwritten by the restore process.

I cannot access websites other than Westminster's. What is wrong?
It has been determined that various music file sharing programs (Kazaa, Imesh, Morpheus) and Tunnell proxy programs have been modifying various configured internet settings on machines that may prevent accessing web pages other than Westminster.

Follow the instructions in this document to restore your settings. You will require Adobe Reader to view this file. Adobe reader is available on your TitanNET CD.
