Annual Chili Cook-Off Brought the Spice with a Side of Donations

Sunday, October 13, 2013

Audio Visual Services and the AVAC, a group of AV alumni volunteers, hosted their second annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, October 12th during the homecoming game at Westminster College. Individuals who sampled any of the eleven entries voted for the chili that they felt was the best of the bunch.

Rachael Hoffman, a 2011 Westminster grad who serves as Vice President of the AVAC, provided this year's winning entry entitled "Healthy Hoffs Pumpkin Quinoa Chili." Hoffman said this recipe was her inspiration for the winning entry, but that she substituted a few ingredients and likely varied from the specific measurements listed.

"I always enjoy some healthy competition with fellow geeks," Hoffman lightheartedly related, adding that using raw meat is not one of her ideal ways to spend her time. "I'm not a vegetarian myself, but thought that some people might like to have a meatless option.  Plus everyone likes a healthy dose of cinnamon and pumpkin this time of year!"

The eleven entries for this year's event came from Westminster alumni and their family members, currrent staff and faculty, and students.  The Chili Cook-off raised over $460 to fight Cystic Fibrosis, a cause that Westminster Audio Visual Services has supported for many years.

Current AV staff members enjoyed having time to meet or renew old friendships with alumni while dishing out and also tasting chili with their colleagues.

"It was hot outside and inside at this year's Chili Cook-off," laughed Media Library Manager Emily Martin. "We had a lot of fun bonding as a staff to pull together this year's staff entry. We didn't win it this year, but it was still a lot of fun, plus it is great to chat with so many gracious alumni who gave up their day for the cause."

Here are the final results of the cook-off voting:

2. Home grown Chilli
3. Game day Chilli
