Westminster College Audio Visual Services is proud to welcome five new faces to the department this fall. Junior Accounting majors, Alexandria Ott and Corey Pelkofer, sophomore Psychology major, Michelle Myler, sophomore Environmental Science major Mara Sawdy and sophomore Public Relations major Emily Moorhead began their duties on August 27, 2012 at AV "Bootcamp".
"We were impressed with the quality and volume of applicants we had for our most recent openings," AV Director Gary Swanson explained. "We utilize an intensive screening process to ensure we are getting the best people into these positions, and are very excited about what Alex, Corey, Michelle, Mara, and Emily bring to our team. They make up a fabulous rookie class, and have been working very hard to ensure that our department can not just meet, but exceed the goals we have in front of us."
Ott is from Quincy, Illinois and has been hired as the Assistant Purchasing Manager. Her free time is usually filled with reading, learning about various religions, and music. If she could trade places with one person for a week, she would do so with an impoverished African child. She is an Accounting major and an Organ minor. "I was born and raised in Bethel Park, PA, but my family moved to Quincy, IL a week before I started college," she said. "I chose Westminster based on the Presbyterian affiliation and Presbyterian scholarship that I was awarded, along with its proximity to my parents, but I stayed because of how welcoming and friendly everyone is at Westminster."
Pelkofer, from Saxonburg, PA, was born in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from Knoch high school in southern Butler county. He has accepted a position as an AV Support Technician. "I hope to learn all the different operational tasks the AV department deals with on a daily basis. I am also excited to learn the tasks that I didn't realize the AV department takes on during the school year," he shared. Pelkofer enjoys sports, working out, music and playing bass guitar. Being vice president of Sigma Nu and a member of the football team both keep him busy, as well.
Myler hails from Wexford, PA and has accepted a position as an AV Support Technician. She hopes to gain technological knowledge and learn more about troubleshooting and problem-solving from her time in AV. Myler chose Westminster after hearing about her cousin's positive experience here. She enjoys going to concerts, water color painting, traveling and photography. If given the opportunity to trade places with someone for a day, Myler reported that she would trade places with Bill Gates, because of his success and prosperity.
Sawdy comes from Newton, PA and has hired as an AV Student Assistant. She is a sophomore Environmental Science major. "My dad went to Westminster, so I've known about it since I was a little kid. I love how small it is and how it just feels like home," She said.
Sawdy's biggest hobby is reading; she even admitted to being a true Harry Potter nerd. If she could trade places with any one person for a week, she would choose J.K. Rowling, for her imagination.
Moorhead, Butler, Pa-born, is looking forward to her new role as Assistant PR Manager in the department. "I'm really interested in putting my public relations learning into practice. Event planning interests me especially. Also, my knowledge of most of the equipment is limited, so I'm excited to become more comfortable with that," she said. An active student, Emily participates in SGA and is a part of the Phi Mu fraternity. When asked who she would switch places with for a day, she chose her great-grandmother, explaining:
"My great-grandma Margarete Moorhead was a really influential woman. She volunteered during the feminist movement and always stood up for what she believed in, even when it wasn't popular."
