Westminster Audio Visual Services alumni will host their first-ever Chili Cook-Off to benefit Cystic Fibrosis at their annual AV Homecoming Tailgate. The event will begin at 11:30 am on Saturday, September 29, 2012 next to Burry Stadium.
"Come join us for a good time, some great food, and lets all turn the heat up on cystic fibrosis!" announced AVAC officer William "BJ" Sieg ('06), who along with wife Betsy (Nolan, '07) and their son Will have been regular attendees of the AV's annual tailgate events. "There is yet again a lot of cool stuff going on at Westminster and in AV Services, but I have to say that one of the coolest things going on is the annual tailgate. Betsy and I are looking forward to seeing everyone that weekend."
Although the tailgate attracts mainly AV alumni and their families, everyone is encouraged to come and enjoy a bowl of chili for a good cause. Participants will sample different chili recipes made by current and alumni AV staff and will vote on which chili they enjoy the most. A prize and certificate will be awarded to the winning recipe.
This is the third year for the AV Alumni Council Tailgate; however, 2012 is the first year for the chili event. Gary Swanson, Director of Audio Visual Services, says he is very excited for this new addition. "Each year, our alumni officers come up with something new to top the previous year's gathering. From past experience, I know we have some pretty fabulous cooks, and personally, I'm looking forward to indulging in their offerings while helping out a great cause, and catching up with so many great people," Swanson said.
AV Alumni President Mike Miller says the purpose of the AV Alumni Tailgate is to keep people coming back to Westminster to stay in touch and enjoy time together. "This will be our third year putting on the tailgate. We have had beautiful weather along with wind & rain; we have eaten deep fried turkeys and have passed out plenty of hot dogs and AV cookies," Miller said. "Our goal is to always have fun and welcome as many alumni back to campus as we can. Each year we have been able to do that, and we look forward to continuing that while raising much needed funding for CF."
Raising money for Cystic Fibrosis has been a long-time goal of for AV Services. The department has particpated for many years in college wide efforts and fundraisers for CF, particularly for Claire Hartner, daughter of Westminster Enterprise Network Manager Kelly Hartner. Last year the department and a number of other groups from Westminster's campus helped "Team Claire" collect over $36,000 in generous donations to the worthy cause.
Public Relations Manager Kelly Matune is looking forward to meeting with alumni from the past. "Each year, I get really excited to attend the Alumni Tailgate. AV staff, new and old, feels like family to me," said Matune. "The Alumni Tailgate is a great chance to reunite with old friends and eat tasty food. I encourage everyone to come eat some chili and AV cookies and have a good time."
