The McGill Library will host their first-ever "Library FYO (First Years Only)" event during Fresh Start on Thursday, August 30 from 8:30 until midnight, when First Year students are invited to McGill for music, food, prizes, and probably the only chance they will ever have to play golf in a library.
Library and Audio Visual Services, as well as the Music Library will be featured at designated putting holes on the course, where students will be able to learn more about the various McGill, Music Library, and Audio Visual services that are available to them. Students must show their Titan Card to get into the event.
"McGill Library, Audio-Visual Services, and the Music Library are all here to help students during their time at Westminster. But we understand that the three different collections, not to mention the sheer size of the McGill Library building, can be overwhelming for some of our new students," said Director of Library Services, Erin Smith. "First, we hope that they have fun. Second, we hope that they learn something about the resources that Westminster has to offer and that they walk away from the event with plans of coming back to visit again soon."
Many groups came together to make this event possible and Smith expressed gratitude for this. Those individuals and groups include Camille Hawthorne, Audio-Visual Services John M. Ryniawec III, Tawni Darby, Caitlin Oertly, SGA, the Fresh Start Team, SGA, and CPC. Credit for setting up a miniature golf course in the building goes, Smith said, to Jamie Kohler, a McGill librarian.
"We came up with the Library FYO as way to ‘introduce' the building, our collections, and our staff in a fun way so that when the time comes for them to do that first research assignment, they will know where to come for help."
