Westminster's Audio Visual department will host another E-Recycling Drive Saturday, April 21st from 9 am-Noon at the Hoyt Science Resources Center Loading Dock. Pennsylvania has made it easier for consumers to recycle old technology. Effective as of January 1st of this year, the Covered Device Recycling Act (CDRA), under the Producer Responsibility Law (HB 708), makes select items free to recycle for consumers. Please note: Fees still apply to businesses and organizations.
Covered materials, as laid out by this act, refers to the following:
- Laptop and desktop computers
- Computer monitors
- Computer printers
- Computer mice
- Any other device sold exclusively for external use with a computer that provides input or output into or from a computer
- Televisions with a screen size more than 4 inches diagonally
"We try to make it as convenient as possible for consumers to responsibly dispose of their appliances, so together, we can eliminate as much of our footprint as we can," said Emily Martin, AV Services Student Assistant.
The E-Steward certification enables individuals and organizations who dispose of their old electronic equipment to easily identify recyclers that adhere to the highest standard of environmental responsibility and worker protection, and that they keep materials in North America.
All monies go directly to the recycler. Westminster College provides the drop off location and Audio Visual Services provides volunteer labor for these drives. No money is retained by the College.
To date, over 32,000 pounds of outdated technology has been recycled responsibly through the Westminster AV drives. Doing so diverts it from landfills where various toxic substances can quickly breakdown and leak into food and drinking water. These substances have been documented to connect to various severe health problems and learning disabilities.
