Brown Participates in Student Panel for PICPA Day of Accounting

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

Jake Brown, a Westminster College senior Accounting major and Audio Visual Technical Support manager participated as a student representative in a panel of accounting professionals at the PIPCA Day of Accounting. The event, sponsored by Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants was held on November 14th in the Westminster College Witherspoon Rooms and Berlin Lounge.

PICPA is a statewide resource that provides high school students with an opportunity to experience different aspects of accounting. West Middlesex, Shenango and other high schools participated with over 180 high school students to learn more about this career path. This event encouraged collaboration among groups for professional networking, showed the benefits of pursuing a career in accounting, and offered high school students a glimpse of what an accounting major might experience in college.

Students were able to talk to a student panel of senior accounting majors and other professionals, as well as the chair and professor of the Economics and Business Department, Jesse Ligo. After the students had opportunity to meet with all of the groups, they enjoyed lunch while students from the panel made their way around to talk to students individually and answer questions.

"Participation in this panel not only was something that I could put on my resume, but it was an invaluable learning experience," said Brown. "It gave me a chance practice my professional skills and communicate with high school students about accounting, where it has taken me and will eventually in the future. It's not that long ago that I was in their shoes with many of the same questions."

Brown and others on the panel were asked accounting based questions about internships, the accounting major at Westminster College, and venturing into the professional realm after obtaining a degree. A tour of Westminster College for all interested followed.
