Pianist Marie Libal-Smith has performed in numerous venues throughout the United States and Canada. As guest artist, she has appeared at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Queens College in New York City, and the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music in Cleveland, Ohio.
Ms. Libal-Smith has performed in concert with flutists Carol Wincenc, Amy Porter, Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra principal flutist Adria Sternstein Foster, violinists Christopher Wu and Linda Fisher of the Pittsburgh Symphony, Marissa Regni of the National Symphony in Washington D.C, and Metropolitan Opera soprano Susanna Phillips. In 2012, Ms. Libal-Smith performed the premiere of Indiana composer Diane Whitacre’s The Shoemaker’s Dream with flutist Kathy Blocki. In Pittsburgh, she has performed with members of the Pittsburgh Opera Young Artist’s program.
For many years, Ms. Libal-Smith played for the Metropolitan Opera District auditions held in Bloomington, Indiana. She also served as masterclass accompanist for Giorgio Tozzi, Vera Scammon, and Gianna D’Angelo among others.
Ms. Libal-Smith has been collaborative pianist at several institutions including the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, the DePauw University School of Music, the University of Alabama Huntsville, Duquesne University, and the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music in the flute studio of Jeanne Baxtresser. Currently, she is a member of the piano faculty of Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, where she coaches for Opera Westminster and collaborates in recital with students and guest artists.
From the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music, Ms. Libal-Smith earned the BM in piano, and an MM in piano from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She also obtained the doctoral-level Specialist in Music Education degree from IU Bloomington.
Ms. Libal-Smith has taught studio piano, collaborative piano, and music education courses at Indiana University, UAH, Geneva College and Westminster College.
Ms. Libal-Smith performs extensively with soprano Lara Lynn Cottrill. Collaboration with Ms. Cottrill has resulted in a recent CD release called Language of Romance, featuring the art songs of Bellini and Austrian composer Joseph Marx.
