Westminster College Visiting Assistant French Professor Presents Research at the University of Notre Dame

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Dr. Leslie Kealhofer, Westminster College visiting assistant professor of French, gave a guest lecture Oct. 8 at the University of Notre Dame, her alma mater.

"Mothers, Daughters, and the Transmission of Memory in Documentaries by Maghrebi-French Women" examines how contemporary documentaries directed by women of North African origin in France treat the theme of memory and the transmission of memory within the context of the mother-daughter dynamic.

Westminster College Audio Visual Services' First Annual Chili-Cook-off Turns Up Heat on Cystic Fibrosis

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College Audio Visual Services (AV) held its first annual Chili Cook-off during homecoming festivities Sept. 29 and raised more than $300 to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The cook-off was themed as "Help Us Crank Up the Heat on Cystic Fibrosis." It was $1 to taste all seven of the unique homemade, donated entries, and $3 for a bowl. The entries included a variety of ingredients, including sweet potato and quinoa, jalapenos, and apples. The winner entry was "Maureen's Chicken Chili" by Maureen Swanson.

Westminster College Alumni to Present Reggio Emilia Program Model to Education Majors

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College Department of Education will host a presentation on the Reggio Emilia Program Model Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 11:40 a.m.-12:40 p.m. in the Maple Room in the McKelvey Campus Center.

The Reggio Emilia model's key elements are incorporating visual arts and projects into the learning experience, letting the child explore topics of their choice through visual projects and allowing them to return to those topics to advance their understanding. It also promotes collaboration among teachers, students and parents, and documentation of the learning experiences in order to assist teachers and parents, and to allow children to reflect on their learning experiences.

Westminster College to Celebrate AV Week Oct. 16-20

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College will celebrate International Audio Visual Week, Oct. 16-20, with a series of campus events that are free to the public.

The Titan Terror Project Showcase is Thursday, Oct. 18 at 12:45 p.m. in the Mueller Theatre at the McKelvey Campus Center. This is the conclusion to a short film contest that required the Westminster community "filmmakers," as well as Mercer and Lawrence County residents, to create a thrilling or mysterious three-minute mini-movie without the use of graphic violence or gore.  This is the first year that the College received entries from high schools.

Westminster College Freshmen Harvest Corn for Food Bank

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College freshmen spent an afternoon in September harvesting corn at Apple Castle as part of an "Inquiry" course and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank's gleaning program.

According to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank's 2012 Hunger Profile of Lawrence County, during the 2010-2011 fiscal-year approximately 6,054 people were served food each month in the county and the Food Bank distributed over 1.4 million pounds of food throughout the county. Over 600,000 of that had been donated to the Food Bank.

Westminster College Education Department Hosts I Am Moving, I Am Learning Presentation

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College Department of Education will host "I Am Moving, I Am Learning" Oct. 22 at 11:40 a.m. in the Witherspoon Maple Room of the McKelvey Campus Center. The event is free to the public.

"I Am Moving, I Am Learning" is a national pre-school initiative that promotes healthy habits and active learning in early childhood and will be presented by Joe Smith, a national board certified teacher in physical education and trainer for the program. He will speak on the importance of physically and mentally engaging young children in their learning.

Westminster College Business Students Place in Top 100 in Global Business Strategy Game

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Students in the Westminster College "Strategic Management" capstone course recently placed in the Top 100 in their game-to-date performance in a global simulation known as the Business Strategy Game.

The students are competing with over 2,800 teams from 200 colleges and universities around the world. Each week of class simulates a year in the life of the organization that student teams manage. Westminster's team "Andes Athletics" placed 55th in their game-to-date performance in the last week of September and 98th in the first week of October.
