Science Students Participated in River Cruise

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Fourteen Westminster College science students participated in the Ohio River Watershed Cruise Sept. 22.

The boat, with nearly 400 passengers from the environmental field, cruised the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers near Pittsburgh.  Scientific presentations on the local watershed and Marcellus Shale energy extraction were given and more than 20 educational displays related to watersheds, conservation, and alternative energy were on exhibit.

Westminster chemistry majors Nicole George and Zach Smith and their adviser, Dr. Helen Boylan, Westminster associate professor of chemistry, presented a display on solar energy and Sustainability in Motion, an outreach program they oversee.

"It was a great opportunity for our students to experience first-hand what is going on in the environmental field," Boylan said.  "The students were able to network with many environmental professionals."

Boylan, a Westminster graduate who joined the faculty in 2001, earned her Ph.D. from Duquesne University.
