Preschool Lab Hosts Summer Science Camp

Friday, July 6, 2012

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College Preschool Lab hosted its eighth annual Summer Camp for Kids June 18-22. The program provided children, ages 4-6, exciting opportunities to learn basic science concepts through investigation, data collection, sensory exploration and guest speakers.

During the five days of science fun 40 preschoolers learned about air, chemistry, physics and biology through demonstrations and experiments coordinated by Westminster faculty. Activities included air-plane construction, outside wind experiments, creating mystery painting and homemade silly putty, egg drop experiments, squeeze bottle rockets, and whacky wheel racing.

Faculty members who participated included Dr. John Robertson, associate professor of biology; Dr. Helen Boylan, associate professor of chemistry; Dr. Douglas Armstead, assistant professor of physics, and Dr. Marosh Furimsky, assistant professor of biology. The camp was led by the preschool's former head teacher, Diana Reed, and newly appointed head teacher Debi Roud.

The camp was sponsored by Westminster's Drinko Center for Experiential Learning. The center was created to enrich undergraduate education at Westminster through advancing world-class teaching as well as by participating in collaborations that address community and regional needs including strengthening K-12 education.

The Westminster College Preschool Lab is a multi-purpose facility that serves both Westminster and the community.  Designed by early childhood experts, the laboratory school is committed to providing an excellent learning experience for the area's children.  The program is enhanced by the use of innovative curriculum, well-trained staff, developmentally appropriate equipment, and individual attention.  It is accredited by the NAEYC's National Academy of Early Childhood Programs.
