SIFE Team Competed in New York City

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Westminster College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) participated in the SIFE Northeastern Regional Competition March 26 in New York City.

Westminster won its division at the regional event the past three years, but was unable to defend its title in New York. "Teams are randomly assigned to divisions," explained David Smith, Westminster assistant professor of accounting and the group's adviser. "Just our luck, this year's division included Bryant University, a team that won its division seven of the past eight years, and the University of Nebraska, a team that travels nationwide for regional competitions. The competition was just too intense."

Westminster SIFE President Steven LaRue directed the presentation given to a panel of 19 judges. Also involved in the presentation were Vice President Stephen Previs, Treasurer Sydney Serjak, Historian Brooke Emmonds, Alex Bugel, Chelsea Dean, Cody Donaldson, Kelsey Loccisano, Stephen Mildner, and Brittany Siebart.

Additional Westminster SIFE students who attended in support of the presentation were: Andrew Anthony, Sam Becherer, Lindsay Drabik, Leigha Krivacek, Josh Masters, Dan Matt, Kyle Pierce, Veronica Pustay, audio visual technician Zach Wahal, and Rick Yelley. Secretary Alicia Seitz was unable to attend.

"SIFE teams take what students have learned in the classroom and in other areas of life, and use this knowledge to create and implement educational outreach projects in their community," Smith said. "The goal of the projects is to promote financial, economic, and ethical well-being in the community through the members' knowledge and experiences in areas of market economics, entrepreneurship, business ethics, and the financial skills needed to survive in today's financial world."

The competition format involved team presentations highlighting each team's annual accomplishments. The Westminster group's community service activities included: presentations to Westminster students and neighboring high schools; operation of a student consulting service that assisted four local businesses; organization of the Westminster Environmental Forum in cooperation with the Sierra Student Coalition; and organization of a stock market competition between teams from local high schools.

In addition to the competition, a career fair provided an opportunity for students to talk with recruiters from a variety of businesses and industries. According to Smith, several team members have had correspondence or interviews with companies represented at the fair.

The Westminster SIFE team elected officers for the next academic year: Dean will serve as president, Donaldson as vice president, Serjak as treasurer, Pustay as secretary, LaRue as historian, and Matt as publicity chair.
