Women’s Track & Field: Four Titans Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Four Titans from the Westminster women's track & field teams were recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on its 2013-14 USTFCCCA All-Academic honors list.

Senior sprinter Haley Gabor (New Kensington, Pa./Ford City), sophomore pole vaulter Marissa Kalsey (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg), freshman pole vaulter Brooke Mancuso (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), and freshman pole vaulter Cassidy Shepherd (Greensburg, PA / Salem) all earned a spot on the distinguished list. All four also represented Westminster at the Outdoor Track & Field Nationals where Kalsey picked up her fourth-straight All-American honor. Mancuso and Shepherd joined Kalsey for an All-American distinction at Indoor Nationals.

Westminster Produces 54 Athletes on Spring Academic Honor Roll

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) recognized 54 Westminster College student-athletes who were named to the PAC Spring 2014 Academic Honor Roll.

The PAC Academic Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes on varsity sports teams who have earned a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale during their semester of competition. A total of 461 student-athletes from the 10-league schools were recognized.   

The following is a listing of the 54 Westminster student-athletes recognized on the PAC Spring 2014 Academic Honor Roll:

Outdoor Track & Field: 2014 Review

The women's and men's track teams both placed second at the 2014 PAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships which took place at Harold Burry Stadium. The men's team scored 127.6 points to finish just 3.4 points away from its fourth consecutive PAC championship. The women's team tallied 133 points at the championship meet.

The women's and men's teams combined for a total of nine first place finishes, eight in individual events and one relay championship. 

Senior Haley Gabor (New Kensington, PA / Ford City) earned the PAC Women's Track Co-MVP award. She won the 200m in a school and PAC-record time of :25.25 and finished second in the 100m and 400m events.  Gabor also ran the anchor leg on the first-place 4x400m relay team that won with a school-record time of 4:00.15. Completing that quartet were Alicia Nuzzo, Marissa Toensing, and Caitlin Yakopin. Gabor also was a member of the 4x100m relay team that finished third.

Sophomore Marissa Kalsey (Waynesburg, PA / Waynesburg) won her second straight PAC championship in the pole vault with a 3.75 meter performance. Freshman Cassidy Shepherd (Greensburg, PA / Salem) won the gold medal in the long jump with a leap of 5.08 meters. Senior Moriah Agnew (Bridgeport, OH / Bridgeport) was also a first-place finisher on the women's side with a championship performance in the discus with a throw of 38.59 meters.

Pacing the men's team was senior thrower Jason Frawley (Franklin, PA / Franklin) who placed first in the shot put with a toss of 14.51 meters and first in the discus with a throw of 42.55 meters. Senior Anthony Thomas (New Castle, PA / Union) won gold with a mark of 42.55 meters in the triple jump, an event in which he is the school record holder. Rounding out the first-place finishers on the men's team was sophomore Andrew Brannen (Pittsburgh, PA / Peters Township) with a jump of 4.40 meters in the pole vault.

Earning silver medals at the PAC Championship Meet on the women's team were junior Alaura Hanssen (New Wilmington, PA / Wilmington) in the discus, junior Jenny Jones (Erie, PA / Fort LeBoeuf) in the 10,000m, and Shepherd in the pole vault.

On the men's side, junior Jake Dindak (Pittsburgh, PA / Baldwin) earned silver in the 400m and also anchored the men's 4x400m relay team that finished in second place. Other members of that relay team were senior Rob Brooks (Amityville, NY / Amityville), sophomore Anthony Yasko (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood), and freshman Scott Hughes (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler).

Four members of the Westminster women's track & field teams also competed at the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The event was held at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

Kalsey earned the fourth All-American honor of her career with a third-place finish in the pole vault. Kalsey registered six team points for the Titans after her finals jump of 12-07.50 (3.85m). Kalsey now has one more All-American laurels than any Titan (male or female) in school history.

Shepherd finished 10th in the pole vault with a jump of 11-09.75 (3.60m), while classmate Brooke Mancuso (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) tied for 17th with a mark of 11-09.75 (3.60m). Shepherd cleared 11-09.75 on her opening attempt, while Mancuso cleared the height on her third and final attempt.

All three pole vaulters earned the distinction of All-American at the 2014 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in March.

Gabor finished 17th in the 400 (56.88). Gabor, who made her first appearance at Nationals, was seeded 15th with a school-record time of 56.35. She was the first Titan in school history (male or female) to qualify in the 400.

Westminster was led by seventh-year head coach Tim McNeil, while assistant Bradi Rhoades coached the Titan pole vaulters.

Track & Field: Gabor Competes at Nationals

DELAWARE, Ohio - Westminster senior Haley Gabor (New Kensington, Pa. / Ford City) competed in the 400 at the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. The event is being held Thursday-Saturday, May 22-24, at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

Gabor finished 17th in the preliminaries (56.88). Gabor, who made her first appearance at Nationals, was seeded 15th with a school-record time of 56.35. She was the first Titan in school history (male or female) to qualify in the 400.

Gabor was one of four Titans who competed at this year's Nationals. Sophomore Marissa Kalsey (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg) earned the fourth All-American honor of her career with a third-place finish in the pole vault on Thursday. Freshman Cassidy Shepherd (Greensburg, Pa. / Salem) finished 10th in the pole vault, while classmate Brooke Mancuso (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) tied for 17th.

Track & Field: Kalsey Earns Fourth Career All-American Honor

DELAWARE, Ohio - Three Titan female pole vaulters competed at the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday. The event is being held Thursday-Saturday, May 22-24, at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

Westminster College sophomore Marissa Kalsey (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg) earned the fourth All-American honor of her career with a third-place finish in the pole vault. Kalsey registered six team points for the Titans after her finals jump of 12-07.50 (3.85m). Kalsey now has two more All-American laurels than any Titan (male or female) in school history.

"It feels great," Kalsey said. "I definitely wanted to do better. I wanted [to earn] a personal-record, but it's nice to know that even on a bad day, I'm still going to get All-American status. That's reassuring and relieving."

Kalsey went up against tough competition; Anna Etherington from Washington University, who earned first with a stadium-record of 13-07.25 (4.15m), and Cimran Virdi from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the 2014 Indoor champion, who placed second with a mark of 13-05.25 (4.10m).

"That really does help me," Kalsey said of facing the best in the nation. "It definitely pushes me to do my best."

Titan freshman Cassidy Shepherd (Greensburg, Pa. / Salem) finished 10th in the event with a jump of 11-09.75 (3.60m), while classmate Brooke Mancuso (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) tied for 17th with a mark of 11-09.75 (3.60m). Shepherd cleared 11-09.75 on her opening attempt, while Mancuso cleared the height on her third and final attempt.

Track & Field: Four Titans Qualify for Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced the student-athletes invited to participate in the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Four members of the Westminster women's outdoor track & field teams have qualified. Senior Haley Gabor (New Kensington, Pa. / Ford City) qualified in the 400, while sophomore Marissa Kalsey (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg), freshman Brooke Mancuso (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny), and freshman Cassidy Shepherd (Greensburg, Pa. / Salem) have all qualified in the pole vault.

Gabor, who is going to Nationals for the first time of her career, is seeded 15th with a school-record time of 56.35. Gabor is the first Titan in school history (male or female) to qualify in the 400.

Kalsey is third with a school-record mark of 13-01.75 (4.01m), followed by Mancuso who is fourth (13-00.25 (3.97m)) and Shepherd who is fifth (12-07.50 (3.85m)). All three earned the distinction of All-American at the 2014 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. Kalsey is striving for her fourth career All-American honor.

The event will be held Thursday-Saturday, May 22-24, at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

For each women's individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 22 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition.

Track & Field: Gabor Sets 400 Record, Again, at North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Westminster College men's and women's track and field teams competed in their final meet before the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships at the Gregory Invitational last chance qualifier. The event was hosted by North Central College.

Titan senior Haley Gabor (New Kensington, PA / Ford City) lowered her time in the 400, breaking her own school record with a time of 56.35 for second-place. Gabor currently stands in a tie for 16th in the country. The top 22 times qualify for Nationals.

Junior Jenny Jones (Erie, PA / Fort LeBoeuf) set a personal-best time in the 5,000 meter-run with a time of 18:48.75, only about a second off from a school record.

For the men, Titan freshman Scott Hughes (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) set a pair of personal-bests in the 100 and 200. Hughes clocked in at 11.80 in the 100 and 23.22 in the 200. Also earning a personal-best was sophomore Anthony Yasko (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) in the 200 (23.80).

Senior Anthony Thomas (New Castle, PA / Union) added a second-place finish in the long jump (6.87m).

Qualifying Titans will travel to Delaware, Ohio for the 2014 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University, May 22-14.
