Men’s Basketball: Titan Great Chuck Davis Passes Away at 75

Monday, July 7, 2014

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Former Westminster College men's basketball great Chuck Davis passed away on Thursday, June 26 in Brooklyn, New York after suffering a heart attack at the age of 75.

A native of Uniontown, Pa., and a graduate of South Union High School, Davis was an All-American for the Titan men's basketball team in 1960. His 1,408 career points, the third most when he graduated, currently ranks 10th all-time. Davis led the Titans to NAIA Tournament berths in 1959 and 1960 with records of 19-8 and 24-3, respectively. The 1960 Cinderella Titans won four NAIA Tournament games including a 39-38 upset of three-time defending champion Tennessee A&I, a team that had won 18 straight tournament games. Westminster wound up losing, 66-44, to Southwest Texas State in the national championship game and Davis captured the NAIA "Charles Stevenson Hustle Award." Davis was in the first class of basketball players inducted into the Titan Sports Hall of Fame.

A year after graduating Westminster in 1960, Davis eventually got the opportunity to tour with the Harlem Globetrotters. But after he injured his knee while playing in Brazil, Davis moved on with his life after basketball. Davis came back to the states and worked for the New York City Children's Administration. He started as a caseworker and was promoted to the director of the childcare agency. Davis developed a curriculum for his workers to teach parents the appropriate child-care skills and discipline to obtain their children back from foster families. Davis retired after 34 years in 1995.

Davis is survived by three grown children and four grandchildren, his wife Vera passed away in 2008.

Men’s Basketball: Belize Trip Blog – Final Entry

***Members of the Titan men's basketball team share about their 2014 Belize trip in this exclusive blog.

"Today was the last day in Belize for the Westminster men's basketball team.  We started our day at 6:00 a.m. to catch a small speed boat to San Pedro.  We all then proceeded to take a small plane that held only 15 people on it from San Pedro to Belize City to catch our 10:30 a.m. flight.  This two-and-a-half-hour flight took us to Houston, Texas where we would only have to catch one more plane to get back to Pittsburgh.  However, before we caught the last plane we had about a 4-hour layover where we all enjoyed having our first American meal in weeks. We ate a variety of food from Wendy's to Subway to even some Chinese. We finally boarded our last plane of the day at 6:30 p.m. (over 12 hours since we woke up) where our estimated time of arrival was around 10:50 p.m. We ended up landing around 10:30 p.m. where we all eagerly got our bags so that we could go home. We spent about 15 hours today trying to get home so obviously it was a very long day for us but the whole time we enjoyed talking about the great memories we had in Belize.  It was an amazing experience that none of us would ever forget and we were all so thankful that we got the privilege to go somewhere that a lot of people would never be able to go in their life."

Men's Basketball: Belize Trip Blog - Part 6

***Members of the Titan men's basketball team share about their 2014 Belize trip in this exclusive blog.

"Today the Westminster Titans had a very relaxed day at Coco Beach. Two Titans rented a fishing charter for a half day, Jason Pilarski and me. We had a successful time out on the charter catching Grouper and Yellowfins. Jason had the "Catch of the Day" hauling in a "Trigger Fish." After the fishing, the USA Soccer team had a very intense match against Belgium. The score was tied, 0-0 at the end of regulation. The game then went into extra time and Belgium quickly jumped to a 2-0 lead. The USA then retaliated with a goal to make it 2-1. The final score of the game eventually ended at an upsetting 2-1 USA loss. The Titans met one of the coolest people ever while at Coco Beach, his name was Eduardo. He was the man and he was one of the most laid back people and before we left we all took pictures with him for the memories. The Titans also took pictures together at the front of the resort in order to retain these memories for a lifetime because it's not every day that people get the opportunity to travel outside of the country to play basketball. Coach Siroki gave us that opportunity and we are all grateful for that."

"Usually Mondays are not everyone's favorite day of the week.  This Monday in Coco Beach was definitely not like an average Monday.  We started the day off by having some fun in the pool. We jumped off the rock and slid down the slide. We tossed a football around and also played a team game of volleyball. After the morning fun in the swimming pool, we hopped on the boat to make our way to the Coral reef to do some snorkeling.  While snorkeling we saw fish, sting rays, and even sharks.  Call us crazy but some of the players even hugged the sharks.  After snorkeling we came back to the resort and relaxed until we played another basketball game.  Although the Titans took a loss, it was a hard fought game against the San Pedro Tiger Sharks.  Overall, it was a glorious day in Coco Beach."
