Men's Basketball: Titans Drop at LaRoche, 96-87

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Westminster College men's basketball team lost, 96-87, at LaRoche in non-conference action on Monday.

Down 33-25 with 4:49 remaining in the first half, the Titans (1-10) went on a 6-2 run to cut LaRoche's lead to 35-31 with 3:10 on the clock. The Redhawks (7-4) responded with a 7-0 run to take its largest lead of the half of 42-31 with 1:36 left and held a 44-38 halftime-lead.

Westminster continued to chip at the Redhawks' lead and eventually tied the game, 58-58, after Titan freshman John Arcuri (Oakmont, PA / Saint Joseph) drained a three-pointer with 10:55 remaining. Westminster went in front, for the first time since mid-way of the first half, when senior Anthony Thomas (New Castle, PA / Union) scored a layup which gave the Titans a 66-65 lead with 8:06 remaining in the game.  

LaRoche, only ahead 81-79 with 2:42 on the clock, pulled away with a 10-0 run and led 91-79 for its largest lead of the game with just over a minute remaining.

For the game, LaRoche out-shot Westminster 53% (30-57) to 46% (30-65) and out-rebounded the Titans 35-29.

Four Titans scored in double digits, including two players who scored 20-plus points. Freshman Matt Getsy (Mars, PA / Mars) led Westminster with a career-high 24 points (9-for-14), followed by sophomore Paul Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) with 20 points. Sophomore Charlie Wallander (Pittsburgh, PA / Baldwin) and Thomas added 18 and 12 points, respectively. Wallander led the Titans on the glass with eight rebounds, while Thomas and Getsy tallied six boards each. Thomas tied a career-high with a game-high four steals.

David Jackson led LaRoche with game-highs of 28 points and 10 rebounds.

Westminster will play at PAC foe Bethany on Wednesday with a tip-off time of 8 p.m.
