Swimming & Diving: Titans Sweep Wooster, Remain Unbeaten

WOOSTER, Ohio - The Westminster College men's and women's swimming & diving teams remained undefeated on the season as it swept Wooster on Saturday. The Titan women won 146-134 for their first win at Wooster in school history and third win against the Scots of all-time. The Titan men won 161.5 to 124.5. Both Titan teams improved to 5-0 for the year. The Wooster men's team dropped to 4-1 overall, while its women's team fell to 2-3.  

The women won eight events, while the men won 11 events, not including one relay where the Titans used exhibition swimmers.

Titan freshman Samantha Tower (Export, PA / Franklin Regional) led the women with two individual wins and was also part of a winning relay team. Tower won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.61) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.60) and teamed up with junior Ashley Wyland (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice), junior Marina Rozick (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny) and senior Carrie Whisel (Boiling Springs, PA / Boiling Springs) for a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.55). Whisel also won the 50-yard freestyle (25.61).     

Westminster freshman Anne Tillie (Fallston, MD / Fallston) and senior Amanda Marlow (Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg) picked up two individual wins each. Tillie won the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:42.67) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:26.90), while Marlow won the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.65) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.07).

Junior Steven Brooks (Boardman, OH / Boardman) paved the way for the Titans with three individual wins. Brooks won the 50-yard freestyle (22.71), the 100-yard freestyle (49.46), and the 100-yard backstroke (52.99).

Titan Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) and sophomore Matthew Baurle (Jeannette, PA / Penn Trafford) each won two individual events and were also part of a winning relay team. Pletz won the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.44) and the 100-yard butterfly (54.09), while Baurle won the 100-yard breaststroke (59.90) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.51). Pletz and Baurle grouped with sophomore Austin Karper (Carlisle, PA / Carlisle) and freshman Joey Spurio (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) and won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:36.89.

Junior Nicholas Smith (Indiana, PA / Indiana) also picked up a pair of individual wins as he won the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.63) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.24).  Rounding out the first-place finishers for Westminster was sophomore Jimmy Newman (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) who won the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:39.55).     

The Titan women will host Chatham next Saturday at 1 p.m., while the Titan men will next compete at the three-day Wooster Invitational starting on December 5.
