Volleyball: Titans Sweep Two Matches in Home "Dig Pink" Tri-Match

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College volleyball team swept two matches at home in its "Dig Pink" match on Thursday night. The Titans shutout Grove City, 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-8), in game won and blanked Franciscan, 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-16)  in the nightcap.

Westminster improved to 23-6 overall and 10-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), marking the most wins since 2008 when the Titans went 24-11 overall and were the PAC Champions.

Game one was a complete team effort as five Titans had at least seven kills. Westminster senior Lexi Starheim (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) led with a game-high nine kills, while junior Julie Powell (Meadville, PA / Meadville) and senior Megan Romocean (Ravenna, OH / Southeast) contributed eight each. Senior Rebecca Riemer (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) and junior Kassie Freyermuth (Allison Park, PA / North Allegheny) added seven kills each. Senior Katie Palkovic (Camp Hill, PA / Trinity) dished-out a game-high 30 assists.

Powell led the defense with 13 digs, followed by senior Claire Ferrando (North Jackson, OH / Western Reserve) and Palkovic with 12 each. Romocean added eight digs. Starheim and Freyermuth had a team-high three blocks each.

Titan sophomore Megan Prybyl (Mars, PA / North Catholic) led Westminster offensively in game two with a game-high 10 kills. Starheim and Powell had nine and seven kills, respectively. Palkovic earned a game-high 31 assists and also led the defense with 11 digs. Powell, Prybyl, and senior Chrissy Volsko (Canfield, OH / Austintown Fitch) added 10, nine, and eight digs, respectively.

The Titans participated in the nationwide program "Dig Pink", sponsored by Sideout, which has set a goal to raise $2 million for breast cancer research this year.

Westminster will host Thiel next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
