Volleyball: Westminster Falls at Bethany in Five Sets

BETHANY, W. Va. - The Westminster College volleyball team lost, 3-2, at Bethany College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown on Wednesday. The Titans dropped to 18-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference, while the Bison improved to 18-4 overall and 10-0 in the PAC.

Westminster lost the first set (25-21) and won sets two (25-21) and three (25-19), before losing sets four (25-17) and five (15-12).

Westminster was down 21-17 in the second set before orchestrating an 8-0 run to win 25-21. Titan senior Katie Palkovic (Camp Hill, PA / Trinity) led the run with six assists and two service aces, while junior Julie Powell (Meadville, PA / Meadville) had three kills and a block.

For the match, Powell led three Titans in double-digit kills with a career-high 14. Senior Rebecca Riemer (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) and junior Kassie Freyermuth (Allison Park, PA / North Allegheny) followed with 12 kills each. Palkovic had a team-high 40 assists and a game- and career-high six service aces.

Senior Claire Ferrando (North Jackson, OH / Western Reserve) led the Titan defense with a game-high 27 digs. Palkovic and senior Chrissy Volsko (Canfield, OH / Austintown Fitch) added 16 and 11 digs, respectively. Senior Lexi Starheim (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) earned a game-high eight blocks, while Powell added a career-high five.

The Titans will compete at Thiel on Saturday in a tri-match. Westminster will play Waynesburg at 1 p.m. and Thiel at 3 p.m.
