Tuesday, September 24, 2013

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College volleyball team split two Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matches in its Tri-Match on Tuesday. The Titans blanked Chatham, 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-18) in match one and lost, 3-2 (25-23, 24-26, 25-19, 17-25, 15-13) to Geneva in a thrilling match two.

Several Titan underclassmen got experience against Chatham including sophomore Megan Prybyl (Mars, PA / North Catholic) who had a career-high 14 kills and freshman Katie Peters (Moon Township, PA / Moon Area) who set a career-mark with 24 assists. Senior Katie Palkovic (Camp Hill, PA / Trinity) added 12 assists, while classmate Chrissy Volsko (Canfield, OH / Austintown Fitch) led the defense with 10 digs.

In set five of the nightcap, with the game tied 12-12, Geneva scored two-straight points as the result of two Titan errors. Westminster cut Geneva's lead to 14-13 after Palkovic found senior Rebecca Riemer (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) for a kill. The Golden Tornadoes won the set and the match after a controversial call that ruled Westminster's attack out-of-bounds.

Senior Lexi Starheim (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) led three Titans in double-figures in kills with a career-high 19. Riemer and senior Megan Romocean (Ravenna, OH / Southeast) added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Defensively, senior Claire Ferrando (North Jackson, OH / Western Reserve) led with a game- and career-high 29 digs. Also earning digs in double-digits were Palkovic (15), Volsko (14), and Romocean (12). Palkovic dished-out a team-high 51 assists.

The Titans will travel to Washington & Jefferson on Thursday with a starting time of 7 p.m.
