Volleyball: Titans Split Two in PAC Opener

LATROBE, Pa. - The Westminster College volleyball team split two matches in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener on Saturday. The Titans lost, 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15), to Thomas More in game one and shutout Saint Vincent, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-19), in the nightcap. Westminster improved to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the PAC.

Against Thomas More (7-4, 2-1), Westminster was up 16-13 in the first set, however the Saints would go on a 6-0 run to take a 19-16 lead. Thomas More would not lose the lead for the duration of the set.

In set two, Westminster was down 20-19, however the Titans orchestrated a 5-0 run that was capped off with a kill from Julie Powell (Meadville, PA / Meadville) (assisted from senior Chrissy Volsko (Canfield, OH / Austintown Fitch)) to take the second set. Thomas More stayed in control for the next two sets to capture the win.

In the Titans' nightcap match versus Saint Vincent (7-2, 0-1), Westminster was never down in the first or second set. In set three, the Bearcats led 7-6, however the Titans went on a 3-0 lead to take the lead at 9-7 courtesy of a kill from senior Rebecca Riemer (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) and two service aces from sophomore Megan Prybyl (Mars, PA / North Catholic). Westminster stayed ahead to win the set and the match.

Four Titans had double-digit kills on the day. Riemer had a team-high 20 kills, followed by Powell (17), senior Lexi Starheim (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) (10), and Prybyl (10). Also in the two matches, Palkovic dished-out a team-high 63 assists. Senior Claire Ferrando (North Jackson, OH / Western Reserve) led the Titan defense with 43 digs. Powell followed with 28 digs. Also scoring in double-digits in digs were Palkovic (17), Prybyl (17), and Volsko (13). Prybyl added a team-high four service aces, while Starheim led the Titans with nine blocks.

Westminster will compete at Chatham in a tri-match next Wednesday. The Titans will play Waynesburg at 6 p.m. and Chatham at 8 p.m.
