Saturday, August 31, 2013

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Westminster College women's soccer team won, 3-1, in its season opener against Marietta at the Purple and Gold Classic hosted by Defiance College on Saturday.

Westminster scored first at the 9:54 mark when sophomore Krista Edwards (Summerville, PA / Springdale) kicked a well-executed cross inside the 18-yard line to sophomore Raechel Pusateri (Volant, PA / Wilmington) for the score. This marked Pusteri's first career goal. Edwards scored a goal of her own when senior Amanda Turi (Monroeville, PA / Gateway) found her with 20:36 on the clock. Marietta quickly responded with their lone goal, 40 seconds later. Sophomore Kerri Inzinga (Monroeville, PA / Gateway) added insurance for Westminster with her first collegiate goal at the 51:47 mark after she headed a corner kick from senior Jordan Steele (Falconer, NY / Falconer Central).

Titan sophomore goalie Maddy Frech (Leechburg, PA / Kiski Area) earned the complete-game win after gathering a career-high nine saves.

Westminster will play Defiance on Sunday in its last game of the two-day tournament. The starting time is slated for 1 p.m.
