Volleyball: Titans Go Undefeated in Home Tournament

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College volleyball team stayed undefeated (4-0) after two wins on Saturday in the final day of the 2013 Volley Against Violence Tournament. The tournament took place inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. The Titans won, 3-1, over Oberlin in game one and blanked Carnegie Mellon, 3-0, in a hard-fought match in game two.

In game one, Westminster responded after losing set one (25-18), as it won three-straight sets (25-18, 27-25, and 25-12) to clinch the victory.

Sophomore Megan Prybyl (Mars, PA / North Catholic) had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Junior Kassie Freyermuth (Allison Park, PA / North Allegheny) also had 10 kills, while seniors Megan Romocean (Ravenna, OH / Southeast) and Rebecca Riemer (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) added nine kills each and senior Lexi Starheim (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) had five. Senior Katie Palkovic (Camp Hill, PA / Trinity) dished-out a team-high 41 assists.

Senior Claire Ferrando (North Jackson, OH / Western Reserve) led the Titan defense with a game- and career- high 24 digs. Palkovic and Romocean added 14 and 13 digs, respectively. Riemer led Westminster with five blocks (four assists, one solo).

Two of the three sets in game two extended in extra points as the Titans won 30-28, 25-16, and 28-26.

Prybyl and Romocean led the Titan offense with 12 kills each, followed by Riemer with 11. Palkovic had a double-double with game-highs of 40 assists and 14 digs. Ferrando added 13 digs. Freyermuth had a team-high three blocks (two solo and one assist).

The Volley Against Violence Tournament included six schools and all proceeds benefitted the Lawrence County Women's Shelter.

The Titans are back in action next Friday when they compete in the two-day 15th Annual Marcia French Memorial Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio. Westminster starts the invitational against Medaille at 6 p.m.
