Softball: Titans Split in a Battle of Conference Leaders

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

New Wilmington, Pa. - The Westminster College softball team split a doubleheader with PAC foe Geneva today.  Coming into today Westminster and Geneva were ranked #1 and #2 atop the PAC standings.  The Titans took game one with a score of 6-0, but were shutout in game two 1-0.  The Titans moved to 16-10 (10-2 PAC), while the Golden Tornadoes went to 14-12 (8-2 PAC).

Senior Olet Stasko (McDonald, PA / West Allegheny) led the Titans offensively in game one, going 2-3 with an RBI.  Freshman Allison Hryadil (Pittsburgh, PA / Montour), also went 2-3 with an RBI, as well as 2-4 in game two.

The score was tied 0-0 going into the bottom of the fifth, before the Titans pulled away with a five run inning when Stasko singled in Erika Pamer (Beaver Falls, PA / Beaver Falls) for the first run of the game.  Hyradil followed with an RBI single of her own.

Senior pitcher Chelsea Brown (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) had a complete game shutout for the Titans.  Brown went seven innings, giving up just two hits and two walks, while striking out four.

In game two, the Titans were unable to score a run as freshman pitcher Ashley Smith (Spartansburg, PA / Titusville) took the loss.  Smith went six innings, allowing just one earned run.  The Titans had an opportunity to tie up the game in the seventh, having runners on first and third with two outs.  A line drive back to the pitcher ended the Titans hope at a comeback.

The Titans are back on the diamond Thursday April 18 for a doubleheader at Penn State Altoona.  First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
