Softball: Westminster Voted Preseason PAC Favorites for 2013

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) released the results of its 2013 Preseason Softball Coaches' Poll Wednesday and Westminster College was selected as the favorite to claim the 2013 PAC softball championship.

The poll collected votes from each of the 10 head softball coaches in the PAC. The Titans and 17th year head coach Jan Reddinger collected just two of the first-place votes but accumulated 77 total points.

The 2013 poll saw a three-way tie for second place as Bethany (one first-place vote), 2012 conference champion Geneva (2 first-place votes) and 2012 runner-up Thiel (one first-place vote) each accrued 74 points. Thomas More finished fifth in the poll with 73 points and one first-place vote and was followed by Saint Vincent in sixth with 71 points and a conference-high three first-place votes. Grove City was seventh with 34 points, followed by Washington & Jefferson in eighth (33), Waynesburg in ninth (28) and Chatham (12) in 10th.

"Though it's nice to get this preseason conference ranking, we're not naïve," Reddinger said. "As the parity in this year's voting shows, any team is capable of winning the championship. With the conference so evenly matched and only the top four programs advancing to the conference championship tournament, we have to play every game as if there is a target is on our back. Hopefully that target motivates us to be at our best throughout the season."

Westminster seniors SS Katie Hughes (Boardman, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) and P Chelsea Brown (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) were listed on the "Players to Watch."

Westminster compiled a 22-19 overall record in 2012, including an 11-7 mark in the PAC. The Titans went into last season's PAC Softball Championship Tournament as the number three seed and fell to second-seeded and eventual runner-up Thiel in the tournament semifinals. The Titans begin their 2013 season when they travel to Orlando, Fla. for the Rebel Spring games on March 3.
