Swimming & Diving Will Participate in Hour of Power Relay for Sarcoma Research

Thursday, November 8, 2012

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College swimming & diving teams will be participating in the "Hour of Power Relay" fundraiser. The event will be this Friday from 5-6 p.m. at the Westminster natatorium and is open to the campus.

Last year was Westminster's first year participating in the relay and the swim team on its own raised $964 for the Ted Mullen Fund, a fund dedicated to research of Sarcoma.

Sarcoma is the type of cancer which ended the life of Ted Mullen, a swimmer for Carleton College, for which the event began in 2006. Since 2006, the event has grown form 15 teams to almost 200 and has raised over $300,000.

The event is one hour exactly and is done with the entire team sprinting relay style, while remaining as a group, the idea is to "leave it all in the pool" as a group and work to eliminate cancer.

The participants in the event are asked to gather donations for the Ted Mullin Fund for Pediatric Sarcoma Research at University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital. Checks should be made payable to "FJC/Ted Mullin Fund" with the team name in the memo line, and mailed to the Ted Mullin Fund, P.O. Box 437, Winnetka, IL 60093-0437. Donations may also be made online. All donations made to the Ted Mullin Fund are tax deductible to the extent allowed by United States law.

Another aspect is CAC (Colleges Against Cancer) selling foot cut outs for $1 in the tub which people can purchase and place the name of a friend or loved one affected by cancer as they help "Stomp out Cancer."
