Few athletes experience the success that Westminster College senior swimmer Caitlin Lehberger has over her four year career. Lehberger has competed at nationals the past three years and hopes to represent the Titans again in Indianapolis this year. She currently holds four school records in individual events, as well as being a member of all five record-setting relay teams. Some would say that Lehberger has had a great career, which goes without question, but she is not finished yet.
"I'm very pleased but it's not over," Lehberger said about her career to this point. "I'm hoping to do great things at nationals. I want it to be my best NCAAs out of all three and it's going to be very hard to top that."
While the NCAA national championships are in the near future, the President Athletic Conference championships are even closer around the corner. Westminster is currently ranked third in the PAC with a 3-2 conference record on the season.
"As a team, we wanted to have an undefeated dual meet season in the PAC and we came up short for that goal," Lehberger said. "But I know our team and we take our past performances and learn from them. This will just prepare us even more for PACs."
Though the Titans sit behind Washington & Jefferson and perennial power Grove City in the standings, Lehberger is confident in what the team can do at the conference championship meet.
"Our goal as a team is to win and it's going to be one of the hardest things for us to do," Lehberger said. "If we really want it and work hard toward it, I know we can give both Grove City and W&J a good meet. We're going in as the underdogs and there is no other way I would have it be. I want to prove everyone wrong who says we can't win."
After PACs, Lehberger looks to towards the NCAA championships and has high expectations going into Indianapolis.
"Best times, school records, and top three in the nation," Lehberger said about her aspirations on the national level. "If I get any of those I will be thrilled, all three would be even better."
After the season ends, the senior will look to her future in teaching and staying active.
"I want to get a job in education," Lehberger said. "It's sad to say that swimming will be done, but there's an end for everything. I'm hoping to stay in shape by running and doing triathlons."
Lehberger and her senior teammates get their last shot at a conference title when they compete at the PAC Championships beginning on Wednesday Feb. 15 and continuing through Saturday Feb. 18 at Grove City College.
