NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's basketball team finished the second day as hosts of the 18th annual Buzz Ridl Classic with a 91-60 loss to Notre Dame (Ohio) Saturday at the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
The Titans fall to 0-3 on the season while the Falcons improve to 5-0.
Freshman guard Ron Martino (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) led the Titans with a career-high 14 points, including 10 in the second half. Martino shot 5-8 from the floor and dished out a team-high three assists and tied team highs with four rebounds and two steals.
Junior guard Max Spinner (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton), who earned a spot on the all-Classic team, bucketed 12 points, as did sophomore guard Cameron McCleary (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) who converted 4 of 7 shot attempts from 3-point range.
Eric Dummermuth led the Falcons with 27 points on 11-14 shooting to go with 15 rebounds. Al Miller and Curtis McClure also bucketed 14 points apiece.
Notre Dame dominated the boards with a 57-28 rebound margin. The Falcons also outshot the Titans, 46.1 percent (35-76) to 35.5 percent (22-62).
Aside from Spinner hitting a 3-pointer on Westminster's first possession, Notre Dame led the entire game as the Falcons mounted a 20-point, 35-15 lead with 5:30 left in the first half before enjoying a 23-point, 44-21 halftime advantage.
The Titans could only cut the deficit to 17 points early in the second half as Notre Dame went up by as many as 41 points (85-44 with 4:52 left in the game) before cruising to the 31-point victory.
Westminster is off next week before hosting Oberlin on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m.
Allegheny won the other Buzz Ridl Classic game Saturday over Emory & Henry, 63-78. The all-Classic team consisted of the following: George Raftis (MVP) and Charlie Jaicks, Allegheny; Terrance Grigg, Emory & Henry; Nick McCartney and Dummermuth, Notre Dame; Spinner, Westminster.
