NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College women's soccer team advanced in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Championships on Wednesday with a 1-0 win over visiting Catholic in a quarterfinal match held at Harold Burry Stadium.
The No. 2-seeded Titans (15-4-2) defeated No. 7 Catholic (10-8-2) and advance to play No. 6 Swarthmore (10-4-4) on Saturday at Frostburg State at a time that is to be determined.
Junior forward Lauren Graeser (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute on an assist from freshman Samantha Killmeyer (Medina, Ohio/Highland). Graeser's goal from 10 yards out came on a short cross from the right side from Killmeyer.
The goal was Graeser's fifth of the season and Killmeyer's assist extends her school-record total to 20 for the year.
Westminster junior goalkeeper Lindsey Mellott (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) registered her second shutout of the season and her 12th win by making six saves.
The Titans out-shot the Cardinals, 20-19, led by senior Christina Adams (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) attempting six shots.
This is the second time Westminster has advanced to the semifinal round of the ECAC South tournament. The Titans went to the semis in their last ECAC appearance in 2006.
