LATROBE, Pa. - The Westminster volleyball team (1-3) split its matches on day two of the Bearcat Challenge on Saturday, hosted at Saint Vincent. The Titans lost, 3-2 (25-13, 22-25, 25-17, 22-25, 16-14), against Frostburg in game one, however regrouped and won game two, 3-2, versus Carlow.
Against Frostburg, senior Kassie Freyermuth (Allison Park, PA / North Allegheny), who earned a spot on the All-Tournament team, led the Titan offense with 12 kills to go along with two aces. Classmate Alaura Hanssen (New Wilmington, PA / Wilmington) followed with 10 kills. First-year Anna Thompson (Sherrodsville, OH / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) added a team-high 24 assists and one ace. Junior Tiffany Jackson (Las Vegas, NV / Las Vegas) led Westminster's defense with nine digs. Freyermuth and Hanssen added a block assist each.
In the nightcap versus Carlow, Thompson had a double-double with 25 assists and a team-high 12 digs, to go along with a team-high five assists. Jackson also registered a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs. Hanssen led the Titan offense with 19 kills, while first-year Kendell Dickson (Cochranton, PA / Cochranton) added 13 kills. Dickson and Hanssen recorded two and one assisted blocks, respectively.
Westminster will next compete at the 16th Annual Marcia French Memorial Invitational (co-hosted by Balwin-Wallace and Case Western Reserve) starting on Friday, Sept. 5, versus Capital at 6 p.m. in Berea, Ohio. Click here for the tournament's page.
