Softball: Titans Split Two Games on Final Day in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Westminster College softball team split two games in its final day of its Florida Trip on Friday. The Titans lost in nine innings, 3-0, to Catholic, however regrouped and won, 4-3, over Mount St. Joseph in the nightcap.

Game one consisted of a pitchers duel as the game was scoreless through the seven regulated innings. Catholic mustered three runs in the top of the ninth inning to capture the win. Titan junior Carly Leffakis (Pittsburgh, PA / North Catholic) got the loss as she came in for relief in the sixth inning and gave up three runs (none earned) off two hits. Westminster sophomore Amber Forrest (Clear Spring, MD / Clear Spring) started the game and pitched six scoreless innings, while striking out four batters and walking one.

In game two, Titan freshman Cassandra Patterson (Navarre, OH / Tuslaw) singled in the game-winning run as classmate Shelby Brown ((New Castle, PA / Mohawk) scored; putting Westminster in front, 4-3, in the top of the ninth. Westminster junior pitcher Ashley Smith (Spartansburg, PA / Titusville) earned the win in a complete-game effort. Smith gave up three runs (one earned) off six hits and struck out four batters, while walking one.

Westminster returns to the field on Tuesday for its home-opener when it hosts Hiram at 3:30 p.m.
