Tuesday, March 11, 2014

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Westminster College baseball team split with Martin Luther in day three of its Florida Trip on Tuesday. The Titans lost, 5-2, in game one, but regrouped and won, 4-3, in the nightcap.

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning in game one, Martin Luther pulled away with four runs which was sparked by a 2-RBI-triple with one out.  Westminster junior John Jones (New Wilmington, PA / Ligonier Valley) got the loss as he pitched four innings and gave up five runs (four earned) off six hits. Jones struck out four batters and walked two.

In game two, Westminster broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third inning after a RBI-single from junior Jake Haubrich (North Huntingdon, PA / Norwin), scoring Jones who got on with a double. Martin Luther tied the game, 3-3, with a run in the top of the fifth; however, Westminster scored the eventual game-winning run as Haubrich scored on a passed ball in the sixth.

Titan freshman pitcher Chuck Zahn (New Brighton, PA / New Brighton) earned the win in his first collegiate start. Zach pitched a complete game, giving up three runs (only one earned) off five hits. Zach struck out three batters and walked two.
