Softball: Titans Earn Sweep in Florida

Tuesday, March 11, 2014

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Westminster College softball team (4-2) won its two games in day three of its Florida Spring Trip on Tuesday. The Titans won, 3-2, over Marietta in game one and won, 2-1, against Greensboro in game two.

In game one, Westminster took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Lauren Stoczynski (Erie, PA / Harbor Creek) doubled in the first run for the Titans, followed by an RBI-single off the bat of freshman Cassandra Patterson (Navarre, OH / Tuslaw). Marietta cut the Titans' lead to 2-1 after a run in the bottom of the fourth. Westminster added another run in the top of the sixth (which proved to be the game-winner because of a Marietta run in the seventh) when Titan freshman Shelby Brown (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) scored off an error from the left fielder.

Titan junior Ashley Smith (Spartansburg, PA / Titusville) picked up the complete-game victory and improved to 2-1 on the season. Smith gave up two runs off five hits. Smith struck out four batters and walked two.

Against Greensboro, the two runs in the bottom of the second inning were all the Titans needed. Stoczynski doubled-in sophomore Brenna Guard (Davenport, IA / Davenport Central), followed by a RBI-single from freshman Emily Lindsey (Freeport, PA / Freeport).

Westminster sophomore Amber Forrest (Clear Spring, MD / Clear Spring) earned the win in a complete-game effort and improved to 2-1 on the year. Forrest gave up one run off eight hits and struck out three batters, while walking none.

The Titans will continue their 10-game Florida Trip on Thursday when the play Suffolk at 11 a.m. and Husson at 1 p.m.
