Swimming & Diving: Titans Sweep PS-Behrend in First Dual Meet of Season

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's and women's swimming and diving teams coasted to a pair of wins Saturday at home versus Penn. State-Behrend.

The Titan men won 157-106 and the Titan women won 144-87. The men won ten events, not including three events that Westminster used an exhibition swimmer. The women won eight events, not including four events that the Titans used an exhibition swimmer.

Sophomore Matt Baurle (Jeannette, PA / Penn Trafford) led the men with two individual wins and was also part of the winning relay team. Baurle won the 100 yard breaststroke (59.85) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:17.84). Baurle teamed up with sophomore Austin Karper (Carlisle, PA / Carlisle), freshman Joey Spurio (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard), and Dan Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) and won the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.05.

Titan junior Steven Brooks (Boardman, OH / Boardman) picked up a pair of wins in the 100 yard backstroke (54.04) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:02.88). Classmate Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) also won two events as he placed first in the 100 yard freestyle (49.34) and in the 200 yard freestyle (1:51.07).  

Also winning an event were sophomore Jimmy Newman (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) (1,000 yard freestyle/10:23.86), junior Nicholas Smith (Indiana, PA / Indiana) (200 yard butterfly/2:00.67), and sophomore Josh Mackin (White Oak, PA / Brentwood) (1-meter diving/158.40).  

On the women's side, the 200 yard medley relay team won with a time of 1:55.29. The quartet included sophomore Kelsey Reott (Butler, PA / Slippery Rock), freshman Samantha Tower (Export, PA / Franklin Regional), senior Amanda Marlow (Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg), and senior Carrie Whisel (Boiling Springs, PA / Boiling Springs).

Reott, Marlow, and Whisel also earned individual wins in their respective events. Reott won the 200 yard freestyle (2:02.91), Marlow won the 200 yard butterfly (2:19.55), and Whisel won the 50 yard freestyle (26:36).

Also winning an event for the women were freshman Anne Tillie (Fallston, MD) (1,000 yard freestyle/11:31.66), senior Erin Erdley (Meadville, PA / Cochranton) (100 yard backstroke/1:03.61), junior Ashley Wyland (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice) (100 yard freestyle/58.32), and freshman Anita Peduto (Glenshaw, PA / Shaler Area) (200 yard backstroke/2:21.22).

Westminster will compete at Bethany next Saturday with a starting time of 1 p.m.
