NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College swimming and diving teams opened its 2013-14 season tonight as the host of the Westminster Relays. The men finished first with 120 points out of five teams, while the women placed third with 86 points out of six schools. The teams combined for second-place with 206 points.
The men won three events including the 3x100 yard backstroke relay with a school-record time of 2:38.10. The team included junior Steven Brooks (Boardman, OH / Boardman), sophomore Austin Karper (Carlisle, PA / Carlisle), and freshman Dan Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township).
Westminster also picked up first-place in the 3x100 yard butterfly relay. Freshman Joey Spurio (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard), junior Nicholas Smith (Indiana, PA / Indiana), and junior Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) clocked in at 2:42.95. Rounding out the first-place finishers was sophomore Josh Mackin (White Oak, PA / Brentwood) who won the 1-meter diving with a score of 164.10.
The men's team also picked up eight second-place finishes.
The women's team was paced by the 500 yard freestyle relay team who won with a time of 4:57.51. The winning team included senior Laura Nice (Cuyahoga Falls, OH / Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), senior Carrie Whisel (Boiling Springs, PA / Boiling Springs), freshman Sarah Pace (Cranberry Township, PA / Oakland Catholic), and freshman Anne Tillie (Fallston, MD). The women also earned two second-place finishes.
Westminster will host Penn. State-Behrend tomorrow at 1 p.m. for its first dual meet of the season.
