ORLANDO, Fla. - The Westminster College softball team lost two games on Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games in its season opener. The Titans lost, 11-8 in extra innings, to Aurora in game one and lost, 5-0, to Concordia (Chi.) in the nightcap. The Titans dropped to 0-2 overall. Aurora improved to 2-0, while Concordia moved to 1-1.
Titan senior Chelsea Brown (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) got the starting nod in game one. Classmate Katie Hughes (Boardman, OH / Cardinal Mooney) led the offense going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Layne Carpenter (Marietta, OH / Marietta) contributed with two singles as she went 2-for-4 at the plate.
In the fifth inning, Brown hit a grand slam to put the Titans in front 8-2. Aurora answered with six runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 8-8.
In the nightcap, freshman pitcher Ashley Smith (Spartansburg, PA / Titusville) got the nod, while classmate Amber Forrest (Clear Spring, MD / Clear Spring) relieved in the fifth inning. Smith gave up four runs off nine hits. She struck out four batters and walked none. Concordia scored two runs in the third inning, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh.
Westminster will continue its 10-game spring trip tomorrow when it competes against Widener at 9 am. and Presentation at 1 p.m.
