Swimming & Diving: Westminster Secure Win in Last Relay at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Westminster College men's and women's swimming & diving teams topped Allegheny on Saturday. The men's team won 144 to 136, while the women's team won 153.5 to 146.5. Both teams secured the win in the last relay.

The Titan men clinched the win as they won the 400 yard freestyle relay by .14 seconds. The quartet of senior Dan Gutmann (Cranberry Twp., PA / Seneca Valley), sophomore Steven Brooks (Boardman, OH / Boardman), freshman Austin Karper (Carlisle, PA), and sophomore Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) finished in a time of 3:19.22.

The men's team won five other events. Westminster won the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:37.40. Brooks, freshman Matthew Baurle (Jeannette, PA), senior Alan Nedley (White, PA / Connellsville), and Gutmann completed the foursome.

Also earning wins for the Titans were sophomore Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) in the 200 yard freestyle (1:47.17) and 200 yard backstroke (1:59.07), Baurle in the 100 yard breaststroke (58.38) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:11.24), and Gutmann in the 100 yard freestyle (50.22).

The women secured first-place after they placed second in the 400 yard freestyle relay in the time of 3:49.82. The team consisted of freshman Kelsey Reott (Butler, PA), sophomore Marina Rozick (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny), junior Carrie Whisel (Boiling Springs, PA / Boiling Springs), and sophomore Ashley Wyland (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice).

The women won eight events. Titan freshman Ericka Culp (Avonmore, PA) swept the diving events with scores of 222.97 in the 1-meter and a school record score of 205.50 in the 3-meters. The previous school record in the 3-meters was 199.70 held by Marcie Lushen in 1993.

Junior Amanda Marlow (Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg) paced the Titans with wins in 200 yard butterfly (2:14.90) and 400 yard IM (4:48.32).

Wyland won in the 1,000 yard freestyle (11:04.72). Reott won the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 2:00.56, while Rozick finished first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:03.26). Rounding out the swimming events winners was freshman Sara Peace (Darlington, PA) in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:35.54).

Westminster will host Bethany next Saturday at 1 p.m.
