FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Westminster College baseball team was swept by Northwestern in Florida on Thursday. The Titans (3-5) lost, 9-3, in game one and lost, 8-4, in game two.
The game was tied, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth inning in game one, however Northwestern pulled away with six runs in the sixth. Titan sophomore pitcher Kyle Borton (Mineral Ridge, OH / Mineral Ridge) got the loss in a complete game effort and moved to 1-1 overall. Borton gave up nine runs (only one earned). He struck out five batters and walked four. Westminster junior John Jones (New Wilmington, PA / Ligonier Valley) tallied a game-high three hits.
In the nightcap, the Titans were ahead 4-1 going into the top of the fifth inning. Northwestern however scored three runs in the fifth inning, two in the sixth, and two in the seventh. Titan sophomore Zach Merrell (Hubbard, OH) got the loss in his first collegiate start. Merrell went 5.2 innings and gave up six runs off eight hits. He struck out six batters and walked two. Titan junior Duncan Watt (Pickering, ON / Dunbarton) led the offense with two RBI.
Westminster will finish its Florida Trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Penn. State-Behrend. First pitch of game one is slated for 9 a.m.
