WOOSTER, Ohio - The Westminster College women's and men's swimming & diving teams competed in day one of the Wooster Invitational on Thursday. Titan junior Steven Brooks (Boardman, OH / Boardman) highlighted the day with a school-record time in the first leg of the 400 yard medley relay team with a time of 23.94.
The Titan women stand third out of 10 schools with 332 points, while the men are currently fifth out of nine schools with 265 points.
The women's 200 yard freestyle (1:41.24) and 400 yard medley (4:05.58) relay teams both earned first-place finishes. The 200 FS team included senior Laura Nice (Cuyahoga Falls, OH / Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), senior Erin Erdley (Meadville, PA / Cochranton), sophomore Kelsey Reott (Butler, PA / Slippery Rock), and junior Rebecca Mobley (Gibsonia, PA / Pine-Richland), while the 400 M team consisted of Reott, freshman Mikayla Morrow (Columbiana, OH / Homeschool), senior Amanda Marlow (Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg), and junior Ashley Wyland (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice).
Westminster also placed second in the 200 FS relay with a time of 1:42.51. The quartet included freshmen Sarah Pace (Cranberry Township, PA / Oakland Catholic), Anne Tillie (Fallston, MD / Fallston), Samantha Tower (Export, PA / Franklin Regional), and Morrow.
Wyland and Marlow earned sixth-place in their respective events. Wyland finished with a time of 5:19.59 in the 500 yard freestyle and Marlow finished sixth in the 200 yard IM with a 2:11.49 finish. The 400 yard medley relay team also finished sixth (4:01.92), consisting of junior Marina Rozick (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny), Tower, Marlow, and senior Carrie Whisel (Boiling Springs, PA / Boiling Springs).
For the men, the 400 yard medley relay team won with a time of 3:35.02. The team included Brooks, freshman Samuel Angelo (Warren, OH / Warren G. Harding), junior Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township), and junior Nicholas Smith (Indiana, PA / Indiana).
Two other relay teams earned second place for the Titans. A different 400 M relay team including Brooks, sophomore Matthew Baurle (Jeannette, PA / Penn Trafford), freshman Joey Spurio (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard), and Pletz clocked in at 3:27.22, while the 200 yard freestyle team, consisting of Pletz, freshman Dan Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township), sophomore Jimmy Newman (Richboro, PA / Council Rock), and senior Ryan Taylor (Fairview, PA / Fairview) finished in 1:29.49.
The Pletz brothers rounded out the top-5 finishes as Jake placed fifth in the 500 yard freestyle (4:42.56) and Dan placed fifth in the 200 yard IM (1:58.10).
Westminster starts day two of the invitational tomorrow at 6 p.m.
