Trinity College Fire Fighting Home Robot Contest

Monday, May 13, 2013

Four students from Mercer Area High School participated in the Trinity College Firefighting Home Robot Competition on April 6th and 7th 2013 in Hartford, CT.  Student participants were Ryan Hamilton, Adam Hoge, Benjamin Shaffer, and Rebecca Shaffer.

The group of high school students programmed their robot, Mildred, to autonomously navigate through a mock home, find a candle, extinguish it and return to her starting location.  Their robot was the top US robot in the high school "unique robot" division, placing second amongst high school team robots from schools in the US, China, Portugal, Israel, and Indonesia.

David Shaffer, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Westminster, advised the group.  Dr. Shaffer and Computer Science alumni Tim Matyas accompanied the team to Hartford.

This project was funded by the Westminster College Math and Computer Science department and the Drinko Center.
