Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Dr. David Shaffer, Westminster College associate professor of computer science, presented "Student Research in Machine Learning and Robotics" at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 11:40 a.m. in the McKelvey Campus Center's Sebastian Mueller Theater.

Dr. Shaffer has worked with students during the last six years to study biologically-motivated computer algorithms for enabling robots to learn to be more effective in their environments.  The work focuses on self-organization of groups of robots through application of the Genetic Algorithm.  Students' results and plans for future experiments were also part of Dr. Shaffer's discussion at the forum..

Dr. Shaffer, who has been with Westminster since 2000, earned an undergraduate degree from Stevens Institute of Technology and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.
