Westminster College Chemistry Professor, Students, and Alumni Participated in Pittcon

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Eight Westminster students, Dr. Helen Boylan, Westminster College associate professor of chemistry, and Dr. Timothy Sherwood, associate professor of chemistry and department chair, participated in the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (Pittcon) in March in Philadelphia.
 
Pittcon is one of the largest analytical chemistry conferences in the world with more than 18,000 attendees, hundreds of technical presentations, and nearly 1,000 exhibitors.
 
Senior chemistry major Scott Braden presented "Capsaicin and Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) Quantification of Peppers Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography." The research was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Sarah Kennedy, assistant professor of chemistry.
 
The goal of this study was to examine a variety of peppers and analyze the amount of capsaicin (an alkanoid that causes the strong flavor in peppers) in each type using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).   The conversion of the concentration of capsaicin to SHU is a linear relationship.  The results from the HPLC were used to quantify the concentration of the capsaicin in each variety of pepper.  Based on the concentration of capsaicin of each pepper, the SHU values were determined.

Westminster College English Majors and Faculty Participated in International Convention

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Seven Westminster College English majors participated in the Sigma Tau Delta International Convention in March in Portland, Oregon.
 
Rebecca Beers presented "The Moonstone: Detecting a Narrator's Reliability." Beers examined the use of narrative in what appears to be a mystery novel, but is really a novel that cleverly discusses controversial subjects of the time. The research was advised by Dr. Deborah Mitchell, professor of English.

Westminster College Professor and Biology Students Attend Wilson Ornithological Society Meeting, Present Research

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Dr. Kerri Cornell Duerr, assistant professor of biology, and three Westminster College senior biology students presented research at the 125th Wilson Ornithological Society annual meeting in Williamsburg, Va., March 7-10.
 
The following students participated at the meeting:
 
Colin Feeney is a son of Donald and Debra Feeney of Waterford and a graduate of Fort Le Boeuf High School.
 
Samantha Higgins is a daughter of Scott and Mary Beth Higgins of McMurray and a graduate of Peters Township High School.
 
Briana Valentino is a daughter of Lisa Valentino and Michael Valentino, Canton, Ohio, and a graduate of Glenoak High School. She attended the meeting, but did not present research.
 
James Ward is a son of Michael and Kathleen Ward of Washington and a graduate of Trinity High School.
 
The Wilson Ornithological Society, founded in 1888, is a world-wide organization of nearly 2,500 people who share a curiosity about birds. Named in honor of Alexander Wilson, the Father of American Ornithology, the Society publishes a peer-reviewed quarterly journal of ornithology, The Wilson Journal of Ornithology, and holds annual meetings. At this year's meeting nearly 90 students gave presentations.
