New medal to be displayed at Sept. 11 ceremony

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. (AP) - This year's Sept. 11 observance at the Flight 93 National Memorial in western Pennsylvania will include the first public view of the Congressional Gold Medal given to the site.

The medal is the highest civilian honor Congress can bestow. It'll be presented to memorial officials at the U.S. Capitol on Sept. 10 before being shown the next day in Shanksville, near where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed.

Legislation passed in 2011 called for three medals to be struck in honor of the Americans killed in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The medals are to be permanently displayed at memorials in New York, in Shanksville and at the Pentagon.

The National Park Service said Thursday former House Speaker Dennis Hastert is scheduled to speak at the annual Pennsylvania ceremony.
