Medical marijuana backer takes shot at opponents

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - A Republican state senator is criticizing opponents of his medical marijuana legislation who also favor the liberalization of Pennsylvania's liquor laws.

Sen. Mike Folmer of Lebanon County asked Tuesday during a Senate Law and Justice Committee hearing whether it's wrong to call them "hypocritical."

Gov. Tom Corbett opposes legalizing marijuana for medical use, but says he'd allow the use of a marijuana extract to treat severe seizures in children.

Corbett and many Republican lawmakers are pressing legislation to liberalize Pennsylvania's laws on the sale of wine, liquor and beer.

Folmer wants Corbett to allow medical marijuana to be used in treating children and adults for a wider range of illnesses.

House Republican leaders say they're concerned federal law prohibits it and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn't approved it.
