Swimming & Diving: Titans break 4 school records in day 2 of PACs

GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Westminster College women's and men's swimming and diving teams completed day two of the 2014 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship on Thursday night at Grove City. Both teams currently stand second.

The Titan men scored 198 points, behind the Wolverines with 217. The Titan women have 231 points, behind the Wolverines with 242.

The Titan men won four events, including two school-record performances, paced by junior Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) who won the 500 freestyle with a NCAA provision time of 4:36.17; he also set an Invitational, a PAC Open, and a PAC Meet record.  Pletz's time, a seven-second improvement from preliminaries, was 0.15 seconds away from tying a 14-year-old school record. Junior Steven Brooks (Boardman, OH / Boardman) led off the 400 medley relay team with a school-record time of 50.26, while Westminster won at 3:26.15. Sophomore Matthew Baurle (Jeannette, PA / Penn Trafford), freshman Joey Spurio (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard), and Pletz completed the foursome.

Titan freshman Dan Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) was crowned the 200 IM champion with a time of 1:55.65, while Brooks won the 50 freestyle as he touched first at 21.24.

Senior Carrie Whisel (Boiling Springs, PA / Boiling Springs) led the women's team as she was part of two school records. Whisel placed second in the 50 freestyle in a school-record time of 24.15 and was also part of the 200 freestyle relay team that placed third with a school-record time of 1:37.85. Juniors Ashley Wyland (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice) and Marina Rozick (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny) and sophomore Kelsey Reott (Butler, PA / Slippery Rock) completed the quartet.

Titan senior Erin Erdley (Meadville, PA / Cochranton) won second in the 200 IM (2:09.44), while freshman Anne Tillie (Fallston, MD / Fallston) placed third in the 500 freestyle (5:10.34). Also earning second place was the 400 medley relay team, which consisted of Rozick, freshman Samantha Tower (Export, PA / Franklin Regional), senior Amanda Marlow (Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg), and Whisel, who clocked in at 3:56.93.   

The Titan men are looking for their sixth (second-straight) PAC Championship, while the Titan women are striving for their fifth conference title and first since 2007.

Friday's finals of the championship will begin at 6 p.m.
